Bunny Basher 2, is a Keen 1 mod by Benvolio. It is a sequel to The Adventures of Bunny Basher, which was Benvolio's fourth mod. This mod is written in the Irish language, which is Benvolio's second language. That makes it the first non-english mod released. As the game is graphically based, this should pose no obstacle to any players who might not be Irish speakers. It is one of the Benvolio mods that took longest to make, being in development for a large part of 2005.

Technical Information
* Graphics: custom graphics by Benvolio
* Levels: 16 levels
* includes a modified EGA 16-colour pallette, use of tileinfo,
* Tools used (incomplete list): ModKeen 1.0, CKPatch, KeenWright, Tileinfo, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 and, later, 8.
* In accordance with Benvolio's policies of gameplay, there is no patch restricting the GOD or CT-SPACE cheats.

Story
This is a sequel to Bunny Basher. Bunny must save some chickens and pigs from death in a meat factories, by finding the four keys, which are hidden in fields and barns. The in depth story is written in Irish.

Items
* Mortimer's Ship Parts: four coloured keys
* Jar of Pale Blue Liquid (?jam or chutney or something) 999 points

Trivia
* The accented (called "fada" in Irish) characters were listed in the help file for reference during development, and left there in error after completion
* The inspiration for this mod was drawn more so from the farm land of Eastern Ireland where Benvolio grew up, rather than the wilder settings of the first Bunny Basher mod.
* The mod is has some surprisingly violent moments including bloody death by sharp cutting wheels, and intensive farming of chickens and pigs.
* The Green Stool that appears in one of the indoor levels is a direct facsimile of an old milking stool which remains in usage in the Benvolio family home
* Benvolio was listening to vinyl records before it was cool (but after it was originally cool).

The Adventures of Bunny Basher, or just Bunny Basher, is a Keen 1 mod by Benvolio. It is Benvolio's fourth Keen mod, created between summer and autumn 2004. Despite being a Commander Keen mod, it entirely lacks any imagery of Keen or related characters, except for the previews imagery, and the helptext. Bunny Basher is a rabbit, whose in-level sprite is unuasually large, being 32x32 pixels in size. The mod takes place in tunnels, burrows, farmyards and houses. The time setting is arbitrary, as is the location, though it is a generic countryside area as seen in Europe or North America. Bunny Basher is amongst Benvolio's most acclaimed mods. Its sequel is Bunny Basher 2, a mod made in Irish.

Technical Information
* Graphics: custom graphics by Benvolio
* Levels: 16 levels
* includes a modified EGA 16-colour pallette, use of tileinfo, internal level teleporters

Story
Bunny Basher's home warren is in great danger. Farmers and their pets prowl around the countryside, setting down snares to trap rabbits, and leaving dogs skulking around all the burrows. Most of the rabbits are incapable of fighting back, so Bunny Basher is the only hope of the warren. So he sets out to find four poisons with which to poison the farmer, his wife, his dog and his cat. Bunny must search in warrens, houses, farmyards, vinyards, factories and storage chambers to find the poisons.

Items
* Mortimer's Ship Parts: four coloured poison bottles
* Rabbit droppings, as ammunition for Bunny
* Keycarrots - open doors
* Short Grass: 100 points
* Slightly Longer Grass: 200 points
* Grass With Flower 500 points
* Orange Carrot: 1000 points
* Lettuce: 5000 points

Trivia
* The colourful background made out of crosses, as seen on one or two occasions, was inspired by a brief moment in the novel "The Curious Incident of A Dog in the Night-time": "And I wondered whether you could tessellate crosses". The novel was published a relatively short time before this mod was made.
* The mod received inspiration not only from real-life countryside escapades in the coastal sand-dunes of North-West Ireland, but also from the novel "Watership Down" and its classic animated TV series.
Aarrgggh the Garg in: New Yorp City is a Keen 1 mod released by Benvolio in 2021.
Aargh the Garg must collect numerous toys on the surface of Mars.

Items
The point items in this mod are mid 1970s toys from Earth. They carry low scores, sufficient to achieve the 150 point target and win the game. The items are as follows:

Enemies
The enemies in this mod are re-drawings of Keen1 enemies. These are as follows:

Appearance
Enemy Name
Yorp
Pushes Keen playfully. Stunned if jumped on.

Cool Yorp
A nastier yorp who looks cool and will kill Aargh
Charges and kills!

There are also occasional point items which decrease the player's score rather than increase it.

Gameplay
There is no pogo stick item for jumping and also no ray gun.

There is the ability to duck down to a lower height which is essential in several different settings within the game. This takes a degree of practice to do properly.

There are unlimited lives to allow a fair opportunity to the player to complete levels and learn to surpass the many pitfalls.

It cannot be denied that a significant amount of precision in jumps and movement is needed to succeed at playing this mod.

Benvolio, a modder located in the Republic of Ireland, has been in the modding community since September 2004. He uses Andrew Durdin's Modding Forum, and also has membership on PCKF. He has played Commander Keen since late 2000, edited levels since 2001 and modded since 2003. He announced his existence through releasing three simultaneous mods in 2004. Since late 2005 his modding rate of releases has declined, but projects are still in progress, albeit slowly, despite rumors of his retirement. Benvolio has produced the second largest number of mods per person in the entire community, (Levellord taking the record.) But this may change...

Mods:

The 'Revenge of the Shikadi' trilogy:
*Vanished To Venus, 2004, Keen1
Bunny Basher 2, 2005, Keen1

Benvolio's Fun-Pack 2011 contains the following three episodes:

KeenFX is a Keen 1-3 PC Speaker sound editor written by Commander Spleen in 2005.

The utility is designed to work with an external sound file. This means it is only directly usable with Keen 1. However, it is possible to extract the sound effects data from the Keen 2 and 3 executable files, save them in an external file, edit them with KeenFX, and then use CKPatch's %patchfile feature to load the sounds into a mod.

Setup
Make sure you throw a copy of SOUNDS.CK1 in with keenfx.exe; there's no error trapping at the moment, so if the sounds file isn't present the program will simply crash.

Instructions for Use
Once you're in the program, you'll be presented with two Power menu windows; one reading 'SoundBox' and the other 'Visualisation'. SoundBox lists the various sound effects, and Visualisation displays a visual representation of the selected sound.

From here, the rest is up to you. The following controls are at your disposal:

PC speaker sounds are composed of frequencies, which the modder can arrange in a musical manner or a cacophonous texture - both approaches are used in the original games for varying purposes. The PC speaker is controlled with frequency numbers which correspond to frequencies. These numbers range from 0 and 65,535 and these correspond to frequencies between 8.21 Hz (frequency number = 65,535) and 1,193,180 Hz (frequency number = 1). However, in the KeenFX utility, it is the inverse of the frequency number that is inputted, i.e. 65,535 minus the raw frequency number. Some examples of these are illustrated below for reference, where "KeenFx value" should be entered into KeenFX to deliver the frequency required. The below are most of the main notes in a conventional range for melody, and are in a standard western A=440Hz musical space.

A modder who wishes to work with higher or lower notes will note that each note has a Frequency # which is double that of the note an octave above. Using this info, for C2 (65.41Hz) the Frequency # will be 18,242, and thus by subtracting this from 65,535, the value of 47293 is obtained which will produce C2 when entered into KeenFX.

Musical Notes
PC speaker sounds are composed of frequencies, which the modder can arrange in a musical manner or a cacophonous texture - both approaches are used in the original games for varying purposes. The PC speaker is controlled with frequency numbers which correspond to frequencies. These numbers range from 0 and 65,535 and these correspond to frequencies between 8.21 Hz (frequency number = 65,535) and 1,193,180 Hz (frequency number = 1). However, in the KeenFX utility, it is the inverse of the frequency number that is inputted, i.e. 65,535 less the raw frequency number. Some examples of these are illustrated below for reference, where "KeenFx value" should be entered into KeenFX to deliver the frequency required. The below are most of the main notes in a conventional range for melody, and are in a standard western A=440Hz musical space.
Sphereful are large spherical enemies that are found in Keen 5.

Sphereful were probably built by the Shikadi to help guard the Omegamatic. They are indestructible and unstunnable. The main body seems to be made of a glass-like substance resistant to damage, filled with some sort of plasma-energy discharge sparking between the diamond sensor points and the interior. They are thus impressive, but surprisingly simple, doing damage by cutting anything they contact with their spikes.

They move very slowly, floating around and using the four diamond sensors on their surface to detect targets. When they find one, they move slowly but surely towards them, killing them on touch.

The official help says:

The name "Sphereful" is possibly a portmanteau of "spherical" and "careful" (or possibly "fearful") named after its spherical shape and dangerous nature — or perhaps just a simple -ful suffix tacked onto "sphere". Expanding on this presumed pun, its name is used in the title of one of the Keen5 background songs, "Be Very Sphereful With My Diamonds".
Sphereful appear again in Keen GBC; on the Shikadi World, where they are very different, being an earlier version of the Omegamatic ones. They are weaker than those in Keen 5 and can be destroyed. They are also not spherical, being instead only roughly rounded and mostly metal. They are no longer diamond tipped, instead being equipped with two rotating "razor sensors". They will whizz about after Keen but are much less dangerous. They are described by the game manual as follows:

Commander Keen in Torgopolis is a Keen 4 mod released by Benvolio. It is a one-level mod that is notable for using graphics in the style of the Invasion of the Vorticons trilogy.

While Keen can only access one level on the world map, various other (unfinished) levels can be entered by using the warp cheat. They feature tiles and enemy sprites not found in the official level and are apparently from another in-development Keen 4 mod of Benvolio.

'Torgopolis' is notable in being the first Goodbye Galaxy mod to have fully replaced graphics - the small number of preceding Goodbye Galaxy releases contained only small graphical modifications - largely recolourations or repurposing of original game graphics.
In Halloween Horrors Keen must save Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus, who have been captured. In order to do so, he has to overcome evil Halloween enemies and travel through scary places. Since it's Halloween, he wears a nice Vorticon costume.

This mod was the second of two collaborative efforts completed by the consortium 'Benvolilord', consisting of New Zealand's Levellord and Ireland's Benvolio, who coordinated the project via e-mail in the mid 2000s.
* Graphics: The graphics were completely redrawn for this mod.
Story
It was around 7.30 on October the 31st and darkness was descending fast over Madison, Wisconsin. In each house children prepared for the most fun night of the year, while adults prepared for the least fun night of the year. The Blaze household was no different. The youngest kid, a girl, was eagerly putting on a witch's costume. The oldest, a teenage boy, had already headed across town with his pockets stuffed with bangers, rockets and sparklers.

The middle child, Billy, was equally anticipation of the night. He had it allocated as a night free from world-saving duties. He was donning a vorticon outfit. He had just put the vorticon head on when suddenly his photachyon tranceiver rang.

"Drat Hello?"<br>
"Umm, Hello Commander Keen"<br>
"Oh, its you. This had better be to say Happy Halloween!"<br>
"Uuuh, Happy Halloween? ... and, um...."<br>
"Yes?"<br>
"Well... me and the other holiday personifications are being held hostage in the Halloween sector of the holiday world of Phestiv by a shadowy figure!"<br>
"Don't tell me, if I don't rescue you Earth is doomed?"<br>
"Err, total collapse of human imagination leading to the destruction of all life, yeah."<br>
"And there's four of you right? Always is in a Keen1 mod."<br>
"No, only 3 this time actually."<br>
"Fine. I hope you realize you've just ruined my Halloween!"<br>

Lifewater Oasis is a level in Keen 4, located in the far reaches of the Shadowlands desert.

It consists of a lush zone with tropical trees and tunnels filled with Raindrops. Below the tunnels there is an underground pool (which might be made of the same life-giving water as the Raindrops), containing many Lifewater Flasks. The oasis also has a small mound, which contains the way to the trapped Council Member in this level.

The lower tunnel of the level is a secret area, reachable from a hidden passage on the first ledge after Keen first drops down. A switch can be used to activate a platform that will take Keen back to the main tunnels through another hidden passage. The lower, Lifewater filled area cannot be reached, however, though it seems it was not originally planned that way.

The level is quite simple, requiring only to go through the first tunnel, and then back up climbing some floating platforms to reach the top of the mound. Once there, Keen can go down and into the stone door to the Council Member cave. In that area, Keen has to jump over some falling platforms, and go down to get the green gem for the door trapping the Member. After that, Keen has to activate a moving platform to reach the door, and jump over other falling platforms to get to the Gnosticene.

The level is populated mainly by Poison Slugs. There are also a couple of Wormouths, Mimrocks and a Thundercloud.

Miscellaneous info
* The last area is special in that it contains a chasm that seems to lead nowhere. However, there is actually floor that cannot be seen below (it's offscreen, see Chasm of Chills for a similar trick), as well as eight Jawbreakers in total, and even a hidden Mimrock.
* There are 21,100 points in this level. That includes 32 Shikadi Sodas, 2 Three-Tooth Gums, 7 Shikkers Candy Bars, 12 Jawbreakers and 1 Doughnut (3,200 + 400 + 3,500 + 12,000 + 2,000 = 21,100). Unfortunately, there are no Ice Cream Cones at all. What more, due to the level error mentioned above, 49 drops along with the five Lifewater Flasks are inaccessible without cheating. The dying Keen routine allows the collection of point items and, indeed, lifewater drops; however the Flasks are not collected even if dying Keen intersects with them. There are 79 more drops in the level, meaning 128 of them in total.
* See also List of Keen 4 Levels.

Benvolio's Fun-Pack 2011 is a zip file released by Benvolio on 31 October 2011. It consists of three Keen 1 mods.

* The Psychedelic Mod
* Earl Pedro in "Untitled"
* Highway Blues

These three mods are all incomplete projects. All were started by Benvolio in 2005, during the time period between the production of A Sham on Inishmort and the release of Bunny Basher 2. Benvolio's rate of work on mods declined sharply in early 2006 (partly due to purchasing Age of Empires II Gold edition and partly due to moving from a rural to an urban setting where there were, frankly, more distractions). By the start of 2006 Highway Blues and Earl Pedro had been completely abandoned. Very sporadic work continued on the Psychedelic Mod into early 2007 but due to the emphasis being on quality (uncharacteristically for Benvolio) rather than quantity, the project lost momentum.

Thus all three were released to the general public in a 'fun pack' in 2011, packaged together in a zip file. They generated some momentary amusement at what were, undoubtedly, three unprecedent visual/gameplay styles for the modding world. None of them, however, were in a sufficiently complete state to provide an enduringly immersive gameplay, and the future of Benvolio's modding career was called into question.
However, he has modded since...
The Psychedelic Mod is an abandoned Keen 1 mod released by Benvolio. It is included in Benvolio's Fun-Pack 2011 alongside Highway Blues and Earl Pedro in "Untitled".

The mod involves Keen, who has been captured by Mortimer McMire, who has administered upon Keen some strongly psychoactive substances. Keen then must find four antidote bottles to escape from the intoxication. The mod can be completed and has a rudimentary finale.
Commander Keen in Highway Blues is an abandoned Keen 1 mod released by Benvolio. It is included in Benvolio's Fun-Pack 2011 alongside The Psychedelic Mod and Earl Pedro in "Untitled".

The mod is unique for the fact that Keen drives a car on a highway. All four levels can be finished by driving straight to the right level border, but there is no ending.
