The Council Members are a specially selected group of eight Gnosticenes whose job it is to look after, protect and at times activate the Oracle. Together, they form the High Council of Gnosticus IV, and are sometimes refered to as "Keepers of the Oracle". They are helped by a janitor (that looks just like them) and they are served by Council Pages.

They are rather humanoid in form, being almost indistinguishable from actual humans, though they are slightly shorter in stature. The High Council is known to be immortal, but it is not known whether other Gnosticenes are. Neither is it known how and why they ended up being immortal.

According to Keen 4 Story, the Council Members owe Keen a favor (though the reason is not mentioned), and that is why they are going to help him with the Oracle. That may mean that the High Council only allows some people to access the Oracle. It also implies that Keen has had previous dealings with the Council Members.

The Gannalech, who was fearful of the Oracle's ability to foretell both his location and plans, sent the Shikadi to capture the Council Members. As they could not kill them, they scattered them to the four corners of the Shadowlands with the intention that they would then be unable to activate the Oracle. They were trapped in several difficult to reach places (indeed one was banished underwater), and hideous creatures were left to guard them. The Shikadi do not appear to have thought of destroying the Oracle to stop it from being used, though it simply may be indestructible.

The official help says about them:

Keen's job in Keen 4 is to rescue them so he can discover what the Shikadi are up to. The eight Council Members are trapped in the following locations. In all the levels, except for the Isle of Fire, the Council Members are trapped somewhere behind a stone gateway with a green gem on its top.

* The Perilous Pit
* The Cave of the Descendents
* Crystalus
* Lifewater Oasis
* The Pyramid of the Gnosticene Ancients
* The Isle of Fire
* The Well of Wishes
The High Council janitor is trapped in the Pyramid of the Forbidden, though it is not necessary to free him to finish Keen 4.

CK Guy: this is so so out of date

Hi, my name is CK Guy. I am a long-time Commander Keen fan. I played Commander Keen from as early as I can remember until probably '98 or '99. I rediscovered Keen in 2002 after getting my grandmother's old Windows 3.1 computer (which I ran in DOS 90% of the time). I joined the PCKF on September 7, 2003, and then joined Keen: Modding on October 14, 2003, and the KeenWiki on January 30, 2007. I am currently active in all three of these. My projects include a Keen 5 level pack, the Keen: Galaxy tile property modding tool (Ck456Tli), a Windows-based Keen: Vorticons level editor (Mindbelt), and a quick utility to simulate Carmack compression for Keen: Galaxy levels to speed up the level editing cycle (Instant Carma!). In (rather stalled) development is a Keen: Galaxy editor. I will be releasing a small--but hopefully useful--modding utility as part of the "Keen Day 2008" celebrations. I also contributed a level to the Keen 2 Level Competition and made a Keen 3 level a long time ago that I think is on Beyond the Pogo somewhere, but I have a later version of it buried somewhere on my computer.

Apart from Keening, I also enjoy miscellaneous programming projects, reading science fiction books, and watching David Lynch films. I am a freshman at Dartmouth College, where I plan on majoring in mathematics and/or computer science.

edit: Oh My Goodness. This is embarrassingly out-of-date. Talking about Keen Day 2008 in the future tense. I need to update this at some point maybe.

CK Guy: there is another minecart in apple acres, but it is not under poles

This page lists all the bugs, odd behaviours and unexpected actions that have been discovered in Keen Dreams.

Walking on fire
When you find a fire that otherwise seems quite hard to pass, you can try to jump into the fire, and then quickly jump again when you have hit the ground. If you do this fast enough, the game will not realize that you actually step on the fire meaning that you won't die. This will work with radioactive floors as well, but is more difficult.

Climbing up nothing
If you are on a pole and move down on to a Mine Cart, it will drag you along still in the climbing position. If you then proceed to move upwards, you will escape the mine cart but be climbing an invisible pole. You can climb as high or as low as the original pole goes, passing straight through any solid tiles along the way, though enemies will still kill you. The only place this can be done is alongside the right edge of The Melon Mines, as it is the only place in the game with both Mine Carts and poles nearby.

Quick level exits
If there isn't a wall in your way, go against the right edge of the level, and die! If Commander Keen's head goes through the right edge of the screen, you'll complete the level (and if you miss, it's your problem).

Dropping enemies
It is possible to make the Squash jump off of cliffs out of the level, thus 'killing' them; this can be done especially well in Squash Swamp. In Horseradish Hill you can 'kill' all five Carrot Couriers by shooting them as they jump cliffs.

It is also possible to stun enemies with Flower Powers so that they fall of logs, lillypads or other 'one way up' tiles. Any enemy can be manipulated in this manner. The trick is to shoot them just as they reach the very edge of the platform; the stunned sprite has different clipping and will fall off of the platform. For some other enemies, the sprite will only fall off after it has reverted back to its original shape. This can be used to 'push' several enemies off of the bottom of the level, though with difficulty. The simplest way to do it is to stand under the platform edge and throw Flower Powers up into the air just past the platform's edge. It is also possible to stand on the platform and shoot an enemy off, though you have to have good timing. A third possibility is to cheat and stand at the platform's edge with God mode and toss Flower Powers into the air. With this, you can even force them to fall off the level boundaries. However, this may eventually crash the game due to memory leaks if too many sprites are 'killed'.

Fort Cavort is the tenth level (in the official numbering) in Keen 3. It is an optional level, located in the Military Installation Island, in the same area as Fort Vorta Bella, Fort Vox and Fort Vorticon (all of which are optional).

Like Fort Vorticon, Fort Cavort is an underground, hidden installation. Its only entrance is a missile shaft, which contains a missile ready to be fired. The Fort is in the base of a mountain, with a waterfall providing a convenient shower for the Vorticons stationed in there. The Fort is manned by Vorticon Grunts and Vortininjas, and oddly enough, contains a pool with Vortikids, just as Fort Vorticon. It is, however, much smaller than that fort.

In order to finish the level, Keen has to collect a yellow and later a blue keycard, and avoid a couple of hazards along the way (including water and lasers), using moving platforms. In version 1.0 of Keen 3, the platform in the water in the upper left area is too small, making the yellow keycard inaccessible. Fortunately, due to a peculiar bug in the game, it is possible to "jump" through the yellow door in this level.

This level contains a very useful Ankh. Unfortunately, it is near the end of the level, so it is only useful against the last two Vortininjas.
Shelly are small reddish, possibly insectoid creatures that inhabit the Omegamatic in Keen 5. They appear to be an artificial, though living creature, possibly transported from another planet. They will walk about aimlessly, not harming anyone until they get close enough to jump on their victims. Landing from a height causes a Shelley to fracture into many pieces and a puff of smoke. Because of their small size, it is difficult to shoot them; however, when shot with the Neural Stunner, they will explode. They can also be killed by making them attack you, and avoiding the explosion and debris. Shelley are quite rare; they are mostly a curiosity of no consequence, though it may be wise to avoid them near ledges.

Their name is a play on the word 'Shell' and may possibly have something to do with the name 'Shelley' also. In version 1.4 of Keen 5 Shelley are able to push the player about; this can be used to finish the game rapidly due to a game bug.
Boobus Bombs are bombs which are used against King Boobus Tuber in Keen Dreams. Keen must collect 12 of them in order to destroy Boobus Tuber by throwing the bombs at him. The bombs are scattered through the Keen Dreams Levels, however not every level has them.

The bombs are found in sets of three bombs each in various levels. Some levels have three, while Apple Acres and Spud City have six. Keen must complete at least three levels with bombs in them to acquire enough bombs to defeat King Boobus. He cannot enter level 16 Boobus' Chamber without at least 12 bombs, though he can collect all 24 found in the game.

When Keen enters a level with bombs the message 'Boobus Bombs near!' flashes on the screen. Levels with Boobus Bombs in them include Grape Grove, The Melon Mines, Squash Swamp, Apple Acres and Spud City. It may pay to stock up with extra bombs in case you 'drop' some in Boobus' Chamber.

It is not known why King Boobus allows such bombs to reside in his kingdom as they appear to be the only means of destroying him. It is possible they were built by the many children kidnapped by his Tater Troopers and that he is unaware of their existence. Boobus Bombs explode on contact with King Boobus only and will not disappear if they miss their target. (Unlike Flower Powers.)

It's possible to fly in the air without using a cheat. Just press jump and then fire at almost the same time. You'll waste a few bullets, but it's good for getting to tough places when you don't want to cheat.

Keycard troubles
If you look at the Blue Key in the Status Screen, it has a sky blue aura around it; the tiles used does not have the white border that all of the other status screen tiles use, and this error was not noticed before the game went into production.

Buggy levels
At least two levels in the game, the Caves of Oblivion and most notably Hal's Kitchen, contain areas that cannot be accessed. This is probably due to the fact that the Keen 3 levels had to be completed quickly near the end of the development of the game, leading to bad design that accidentally locked out some areas in the levels.

Unreachable key
In version 1.0 of Keen 3, in the level Fort Cavort, the platform in the water in the west part of the level is smaller, making the yellow key inaccessible. Fortunately, due to a peculiar bug in the game, it is possible to "jump" through the yellow door in this level.

<!-- Use this template for a new bug:
Walkthrough
Its layout is fairly simple, so the player can get used to regular enemies and hazards, in this case they are mostly Little Amptons and Sparkies. The player starts at the bottom of the level and must find the exit at the top, which looks like a regular security door that is already open, so there is no need for a keycard before exiting the level.

Miscellaneous Info
* One of the game automatic demo sequences takes place in this level.
* There are ten kegs of Vitalin hidden outdoors.
It may well be Pepsi; having taken toys from Earth, the Martians have likely taken Earth soft drinks with them as well.

As there have been issues with the use of Coke and Pepsi in advertisements and songs, it is possible this affected the name of the item, changing it from 'Pepsi' to the neutral 'Soda'.
The Book is an item in Commander Keen 1. It has 'KANT' written on its cover. Kant was a well-known philosopher, and the book likely contains some of his works. What it is doing on Mars is unknown, it may be that the Vorticon have a philosophical bent. Having taken toys from Earth, the Martians may have taken Earth books with them as well. Either way, it is most likely right up Keen's alley as he is currently studying a college fast track degree.
The ever popular Teddy Bear is a common toy on Earth; but rare and valuable on Mars where Yorps and Gargs undertake dangerous missions to Earth to obtain the precious objects (this sums up a lot about Yorp and Garg thinking). Keen encounters them in Keen 1. They are rather expensive and highly prized, being worth 5000 points (four for an extra life). They are designed to a similar template to Vorticon VI Stuffed Toy Vortininjas and the Vorticon Mothership Stuffed Toy Vorticon, and are used for the same ends.

Keen donated all of the teddies he acquired to the King Hovis Society for the Rehabilitation of Yorps with Bruised Eye-stalks; there being a lot more patients after Keen's visit.

The Raygun is the first weapon Commander Keen encounters on his adventures (though judging by his remarkable aim, evidently not the first weapon he has shot). Keen finds it on Mars in Keen 1, always next to a sign in SGA saying 'This is neat'. The Raygun shoots purple energy bolts, and will kill enemies.

Keen has a Raygun at the start of his adventure, suggesting that it is possible he invented a gun compatible with Raygun ammunition, or picked one up on his travels through Mars. It is not known what the Rayguns scattered across Mars are used for, but it can be assumed that they are for the use of the Vorticon Guards stationed there, even though they never shoot themselves.

Keen dumps his Raygun after episode 1, using a Vorticon HyperPistol for Keen 2, a Vorticon Rail-Gun in Keen 3, and later a Neural Stunner.
}}
The Pogo stick, or 'pogo' for short, is a toy Keen finds on Mars (in Keen 1), keeps, and uses throughout the series. Keen can pogo ('jump with the pogo stick') several times his own height, considerably higher than without it. It is significantly more useful than an ordinary pogo, being able to bound to impossibly high heights.

The pogo can be collected in two Keen 1 levels: the Pogo Shrine, and the Vorticon Commander's Castle. In the other episodes Keen doesn't need to collect the pogo anymore, he has it right from the beginning. However, in Keen Dreams there's no pogo at all due to Keen being in a dream, as opposed to travelling and bringing the pogo with him as in the other games.

In Keen 1, in the Pogo Shrine level, a sign near it has the message BEHOLD THE HOLY "POGO" STICK written in SGA. However, the word 'POGO' is written in the Roman alphabet. The holy pogo stick is worshipped by Yorps and Gargs (though mainly Yorps) as a religious icon.

A few tricks can be performed with the pogo:
* Impossible Pogo Trick
* Pogoing backwards
* Jump through ceilings. If you are standing in a space two tiles high, and activate the pogo and jump quickly enough, you will shoot through the ceiling provided it is only one tile thick. This is a nice alternative to the "No Clipping" mode which does not exist in the Vorticon Trilogy. This trick is made much easier in God mode, and in God mode the trick can be performed in spaces much larger than two tiles high, by ensuring that Keen has jumped close enough to the ceiling before activating the pogo.

* Whilst the pogo stick is only found as an item in Keen 1, it is equipped by default in every episode except Keen Dreams.
}}

The Keycards are found in all episodes from the Invasion of the Vorticons series. They are used to unlock and open doors of the same color as the card. Cards come in four colors; yellow, red, green and blue, with each card having the letter A, B, C or D written on it in SGA. There is some indication that Keen 1 was to feature a 'multipass' keycard that opened any door, but this was later abandoned.

When a door is opened it removes the keycard used, even if Keen has acquired two or more of those cards (a fact useful when modding levels). Keen loses all keycards he has if he dies, or when exiting a level. All keycards encountered are needed, but not to complete the game.

Keycards are probably a Vorticon invention, as they can be found in their Vorticon Mothership and in Vorticon VI. The keycards in Mars were probably put there by the Vorticon Guards stationed at the planet.

In Keen 4-6, Gems are used instead of keycards. In Keen 5 there is also a special keycard, see Keycard (Omegamatic).
The Holy Foot of the Gnosticene Ancients (or simply "The Foot"), is a large statue of a foot, the only surviving piece of the great statue of the ancients that once stood by the Pyramid of the Gnosticene Ancients. It is a very powerful relic, said to lead anyone who finds it to and from the mysterious Pyramid of the Forbidden. It is said that a special collection of creatures is needed to summon the foot from the mysterious plane it resides in.
