Keen 6 is the only game based on the Goodbye, Galaxy! engine that received a revision that bumped the version number to 1.5. This ended up being necessary as the previous patch introduced a bug making the game somewhat easier to complete than intended. A demo version of the game was also produced which later on also received a small update.

Keen 4 is special in the case that a version of the game was released for promotional purposes when the game was still a good deal away from completion. And like Keen 1, there were also a few publisher specific versions developed of this game. The actual updates to the game had some quite minor bugs fixed. The exception is version 1.1 where the bug with gems not getting properly saved was fixed, the bug which in the worst case scenario could cause you to get stuck in a level.

This page is intended to have information regarding events that led to the development of Keen Dreams and some interesting insights into what happened during the development.
Gamer's Edge Contract
id Software's obligation to Softdisk
After John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall, Adrian Carmack and Jay Wilbur had left Softdisk and founded id Software, they had left their former company in quite a tricky position as the Gamer's Edge disk was relatively new yet they were about to abandon it already. Their contract with Softdisk however stated that they were still bound to developing games to the Gamer's Edge product at Softdisk and so they worked the next year and a half to fulfill this part of their contracts.

Fulfilling the contract
In order to achieve this, the team decided that they would be working on Softdisk projects on the side while simultaneously working on their own projects. It was some quite intense work, as the team pumped out games at the pace of about a game a month.

:"As part of leaving, we agreed to do games so the Gamer's Edge product could continue. [...] We were doing this game and some other game at the same time. It was kinda crazy. But doing all those different types of games (puzzle, shooter, platform, and so on) was incredible training. You'd have to work for a decade on normal-sized games to get that experience. We did it in a year." — Tom Hall

The titles id Software developed during this period include Shadow Knights, Hovertank 3D and Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion. Even when working under such intense pressure the guys at id Software still managed to develop quite decent titles and some quite interesting projects also ended up getting released including Catacomb 3-D (one of the first FPS computer games) and Rescue Rover. Despite Tom Hall's initial resistance, he soon also got convinced that a Commander Keen game could be developed for Softdisk as a ramp-up for the next trilogy of games (back then Goodbye Galaxy was still planned to be a trilogy).

Developing Keen Dreams
Getting started
And so Keen Dreams entered development. The engine used in the game is based on the engine used in an earlier title by id Software that they also published through Softdisk, Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion (which used an engine based on the Shadow Knights engine, which in turn was based on the engine used in Invasion of the Vorticons).

Finalising the game
During development the game engine evolved to a stage where it was very similar to the engine used in Goodbye Galaxy, with the graphics being in a nearly identical format and the levels also ended up being in a quite similar format to that of Goodbye Galaxy. Likewise, the levels also used the tilted view that also got used in the second series of the games. Keen Dreams was finished in late summer 1991.

Post-release
Shareware release
Despite initially being released solely as a commercial product, the full game was released as shareware in September, 1992. This was most likely an attempt at making the so far very much overlooked episode a bit more known in the eye of the public in the hopes of making a few extra bucks.

Keen Meets the Meats
In the originally released version of the game, after finishing the game a mention of a possible sequel called Commander Keen in Keen Meets the Meats was made. This planned sequel never made it into any serious development stage and all mentions of the sequel were removed in subsequent releases of the game.

Removed features
Extended ending
Originally, the quite crude ending that is featured in Keen Dreams was significantly more interesting. Instead of having just the box of text at the end explaining the following events, there were also plans to include a sequence in which Keen woke up and no doubt a few more pictures/animations to spruce it up, however the animation seen here on the right is all of the extended ending that survives.

Why the ending ended up like it is now is not known, but it was probably either due to time constraints or due to the limited disk space capacity that was available to them (Softdisk insisted that all titles published through them had to fit on a single 360 kB disk).

Music
There were also plans to include music in Keen Dreams, in fact the tune You've Got to Eat Your Vegetables! was originally composed to be used as the title screen music in the game. However the previously mentioned strict policy of not having games exceed the size of a 360 kB disk meant the end for the music in Keen Dreams.

CGA version
A fact mentioned in the shareware versions of the game when looking through the ordering screens of Keen Dreams is that a CGA version of the game would be available. This version of the game was never released. Softdisk probably planned to have some of their employees port the game over to CGA (they had access to the game source code), but due to the display standard slowly becoming obsolete, this idea was dropped.

Kumquat Chasm
When looking at the back side of the retail Keen Dreams box, it questions whether you can "survive the perils of the Kumquat Chasm". Yet there isn't any level in the final game called Kumquat Chasm. This indicates that there either was an error on the box, or more likely, Kumquat Chasm was a planned level in the game that either got renamed or removed during development.
Keen 1 has quite a diverse version history, partly because of the publisher specific versions.

Calvero: /* Fulfilling the contract */ Removed Paragon, added Dangerous Dave 2. Paragon is not created by the id Software guys, they only supplied the tools to create that game.

Finalizing the game

Keen Meets the Meals
In the originally released version of the game, after finishing the game a mention of a possible sequel called Commander Keen in Keen Meets the Meals was made.

Shoot through the roof
See the Keen 1 Shoot through the roof bug, which applies to Keen 2 as well.
F8 Crash
See the Keen 1 F8 Crash bug, which applies to Keen 2 as well, in version 1.0.
Extra levels
See the Keen 1 Extra levels bug, which applies to Keen 2 as well.

Swapped levels
The Vorticon Mothership (the world map) has text on written in SGA to indicate which levels the player will be entering. Unfortunately the levels for Moscow and Rome must have been mixed up during the game's development, as entering the level marked as Rome actually loads the Moscow level, and entering the level marked as Moscow loads the Rome level.

Steps to reproduce:

* Go to the top of the world map
* Enter the level marked as "Rome"
* Observe that the picture near the Tantalus Ray is of Saint Basil's Cathedral in the Moscow Red Square
* Enter the level marked as "Moscow"
* Observe the Tantalus picture is of the Roman Colosseum

Anti-Hero
Keen can leave Rome's Tantalus Ray still active if he goes as far right as possible at the beginning, and hopping up the little hole. This is not actually a bug, but leaves the player in a situation where they can't complete the game.

Vortikids with Talent
When there is a group of Vortikids running around in a small room, sometimes one or two of them can actually jump right through walls. This bug is most common in Home A in the room with the 5 Stuffed Toy Vorticons and 7 Vortikids.

Hey, architect, my corner has a probem!
In the Moscow Tantalus Center, there is a corner missing off a block. See the above picture. Look to the right of Keen, and you won't see a black line where there should be one! Someone, call the architect!

<!-- Use this template for a new bug:

Bug title
<-- a screenshot of the bug if it produces a strange visual effect

(Brief description of bug here)

Steps to reproduce:

* Step one to reproduce the bug
* Step two, etc.
Princess Lindsey is a mysterious princess living in the Shadowlands, and from her title would appear to be some sort of ruler, possibly of the Gnosticenes that live on the planet. She gives Keen some guidance on his quest. She can be seen in two Keen 4 levels, the Chasm of Chills and Hillville.

She wears a golden crown with diamonds on it, and a cyan dress. She looks older than Keen, but her age is unknown nonetheless. She might be immortal like the Council Members, suggested by the fact that she can't be shot.

She has the ability to float in air and to teleport. The abilities may be because of some sort of magic. She will leave immediately after giving Keen advice. Allegations that she is the tooth fairy remain ungrounded.
Princess Lindsey is named after Lindsey Velez, a fan who wrote id Software.
* In Chasm of Chills: The way to the Pyramid of the Forbidden lies under the Pyramid of Moons. (The level is actually called the Pyramid of the Moons in the rest of the game.)

Having recently defeated the Shikadi in Keen 5 and the Bloogs in Keen 6, Commander Keen is just settling down to have his favorite meal of the day (breakfast, followed by morning cartoons), when he receives information that he has just been very stupid.

It appears that a subspace anomaly has appeared above Earth and has caused technology to go haywire. Clouds have turned blue, radios are going crazy, phones ring randomly and morning cartoons are no more. This is more than Keen can bear, and, if the anomaly is not destroyed in a few hours, Earth will be obliterated. But what has this to do with Keen's stupidity?

Everything. By not destroying the Omegamatic when he had the chance. Now his old enemies have gathered against him, with the help of some new ones. The sacred Plasma Crystals have been mined on the Shikadi World and placed in the Omegamatic Warp Drive, which can destroy subspace stability. As per usual Keen hops into his Bean-with-Bacon Megarocket and heads off toward the rebuilt Omegamatic.

Keen is now equipped with a Neural Ray Blaster, possibly related to his Neural Stunner. This gun has unlimited ammunition, though Keen can only shoot one bullet at a time. (He can also injure and/or kill enemies with his pogo; most creatures only being temporarily stunned by the blaster.)

There are three worlds he must visit and whose occupants he must defeat, the first is Fribbulus Xax, home of the Bloogs. (And strangely enough, Dopefish!) The second is the Shikadi home world and the third is Droidiccus Prime, home of Keen's newest foes and masterminds of the whole mess, the Droidiccus. However, after Keen has defeated these foes it is revealed that who else is behind it? Mortimer McMire.

There appears to be some confusion between the planets Fribbulus Xax and Gnosticus IV, many of the enemies found in the Shadowlands being found there, perhaps due to confusion by the developers.
* A small tech demo made by the early id Software
* The one-level Keen 1 mod made by Flaose

Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement is a one-level Keen 1 mod made by Flaose. It is supposed to be a recreation of what John Carmack and Tom Hall would have given John Romero as a demonstration of a new game engine for DOS games, the first ever made, that imitated the smooth scrolling engine used by the Nintendo Entertainment System platform. The original was a remake of the first Super Mario Bros. 3 level that used Dangerous Dave's sprites instead of Mario's sprites.

Some two years after the release of this mod, John Romero released the original Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement on his website //ROME.RO letting the world see for the first time the game that precipitated the creation of id software.
