Commander Keen 0: Part 1 is a Keen 1 mod by entropicdecay. It has no storyline, but a text file included with one version of the mod stated that the story was "Keen goes to a place."

Many of the enemies look like squares or blocks. The graphics contain various superfluous crosses, somewhat intended as a parody of incomprehensible religious symbolism in anime and video games. The map level is very basic, with the levels all in a line. This was supposed to be a placeholder map until a more complex one was created, but it remained in the final version, although "proper" map levels had been tried a few times and given up on beforehand.

A special edition was created for April Fools Day. In this version, the colours of the graphics were inverted and the exits to most levels were placed very near the beginning. In addition, parts of many levels were made inaccessible. In this special edition, the story text states that "everything goes weird". (?)

It would be fair to call the release history of the mod confusing. entropicdecay has lost access to almost all old data that could help clear up some of the confusion, but were they to find it, some sort of rudimentary "making of" would be a possibility.

A fairly early and amateurish mod from a modder whose efforts to produce more polished later mods have, thus far, failed to result in any finished product. Which is not to say that one won't eventually happen, nor to say that it will.

In 2008, entropicdecay decided to create a Keen 0 level pack, but quickly lost motivation and made the abandoned pack available to the community on 28 April 2008. It includes an unfinished new world map and an incomplete level and can be downloaded here.

Note About Text
With lack of knowledge regarding patching, text edits in Commander Keen 0: Part 1 were done by hex editing of the EXE file rather than patching. As there are potential legal issues with modifying the executable and a patch is the more accepted way to change text in a mod, there have been occasional plans to release an updated version using patching instead, but so far it hasn't been done.

The edits to the EXE also may have caused issues with the game running properly.

Level Design
Some levels show repeating patterns in a "more difficult retread of an earlier level"-type style. One of these repeated levels still shows possibly recognisable elements of the first level of the original Marooned on Mars.

Keen 0 Plus
In 2023, entropicdecay released Keen 0 Plus, a slightly improved version of this mod.
The first is via the Main Menu itself and the second is by waiting long enough at the title screen for the 'demo loop' to go to the About Id screen.

Bitmap
The bitmap acts like the screen title. It is a single graphic displayed on the screen. Animating tiles will appear over it the first time they animate. While the h position on the screen is in pixels, the v position is in 'lines' or 8 pixels. (A value of 4 is thus 24 pixels down.)

Text
This is the text. It is horrendously complicated to patch, though it can be made simpler. The following patches are set up as if the default approach is used, giving the maximum line length. Any line can be shorter than this, but MUST end with $00

The text setup on this screen is unusual, it was possibly designed as an experiment in displaying text with margins, but was evidently abandoned. While several lines of text are displayed, they are all printed from one location. The screen takes a chunk of text then reads segments every x charters, writing them one after another. Thus the line of text reading 'This is*****a line******of text.****' where '*' is character 0 (Blank) reads as "This is a line of text." if the 'line length' is 12. (The * aren't displayed. Note the text segment length is (number of lines) * (line length))

This achieves the exact same effect as just having one long line of text with $0As to move down a line. (See Patch:Text patches) This can be achieved by setting the number of lines to 1 and the line length to a large value like $0200W (512 characters.) This avoids having to worry about line length and number.

Locations
This patch controls the location, in the titlescreen level, of the About Id screens. There are in fact two, placed in the exact same location by default. As noted in the intro to this page they are the screen accessed from the Main Menu and accessed via waiting at the titlescreen for the demo loop. Both screens have the same text and bitmap by default, but one screen can be blanked (See below.) or both screens can have different locations and tiles, just for fun.

The location is tricky and is in two parts. The first horizontal\vertical value is in units of 16 tiles, adding 1 will move the screen across or down 16 tiles. The second is in 256ths of a pixel; adding 1 has no effect, adding 256 ($0100W) will move it one pixel right or down and adding 4096 ($1000W) will move the screen one whole tile. (This means that the second value cannot be higher than $FF00W, 15 tiles and 15 pixels.)

So to convert the location take the desired location and divide by 16 tiles to get the first value, then add '00' to the end of the remainder. (Pixel specific locations are probably not needed.) Here the default location is 63, 1.75 tiles. This breaks down to 3x16 + 15 and 0x16 + 1 + 12 pixels.
Blank screen
This patch makes the About Id blank. It will show neither the bitmap nor the text. Since there are two ways to access the screen this, in combination with the location patch above, allows the modder to make a separate blank screen for either the menu or the demo loop. This could perhaps be a secret or, using tiles,a useful extra.

Each disabling patch requires two lines to ensure it works correctly.

This page is intended to have information regarding events that led to the development of Goodbye, Galaxy! and Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter! and some interesting insights into what happened during the development.

From dreams to galaxy
Creating a sequel to a success story
Creating a sequel that meets the hype generated by a successful predecessor is not an easy task, and neither was it that for the people over at id Software. Development of the true sequel started at around the same time Keen Dreams was finished, in June 1991, with the working title Commander Keen II: Goodbye, Galaxy!.

The original ambitions for the sequel included producing three separate versions of the game: a VGA, an EGA and a CGA version. Another improvement on the graphical side of things was to make the view slightly tilted instead of directly from the left. Plans for enhancing the sound experience included richer sound effects, addition of music and support for multiple sound cards (including Sound Blaster). The plans were to release the game by September 20, 1991 and it was planned to be another trilogy of episodes once again.

:* Commander Keen II: Goodbye Galaxy -- This game will break all records! There will be a 256-color VGA version, plus an EGA and a CGA version. All three versions will have multiple sound card support. This game will make the current Keen look like Pong─we have gone all out to make this the best game possible with many new innovations in graphics and animation. (Soon after the release off Goodbye Galaxy we will re-release the current Keen in CGA, EGA and 256-color VGA formats, with sound card support, too.) ─ Vendor letter from August, 1991

A shift in focus
It soon became apparent that the guys at id Software were a bit overly optimistic about how fast they would be able to finish the game. The new tilted graphics took a while bit longer to create than graphics created for the original trilogy took, and they needed considerably more graphics now than what they needed for Keen Dreams. Also for reasons unknown, the VGA version was soon dropped, perhaps because it wasn't seen as being worth the effort. Support for a Sound Blaster specific soundtrack was also dropped in favor of having just an Adlib soundtrack. Also, the tentative release date of the game was pushed back from September 20, 1991 to December 15, 1991.

id Software had also entered talks with FormGen Corporation, and FormGen managed to convince the guys that they should split the third episode into a separate title sold only at retail, and thus the direct sequel ended up consisting of only two episodes with the third episode getting a separate release.

The team moves to Madison, Wisconsin
Tom Hall, having grown up in Wisconsin, soon suggested that the team should relocate over to Madison. After the whole team took a trip over there during late summer, they agreed that it would make a much nicer neighborhood than their current one. So in September the whole team (except Jay Wilbur, who stayed behind because Softdisk needed him) moved over to Madison. Hall only forgot to mention how cold it could get there during winter, something the other guys who were born more down south weren't quite prepared for. Despite the cold weather they stayed there for the remainder of the development of the games.

Getting the titles out the door
Finishing the episodes
As logic would dictate, the guys at id Software wanted to finish off the fourth episode first to get the shareware release out there in order to promote the other two episodes. A preliminary five level demo version of Secret of the Oracle was released on October 9th, 1991 as part of a package FormGen Corporation put together promoting their upcoming games (it was used to promote Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter!). The episode wasn't quite finished yet as anyone who played the demo could tell, but things were definitely getting there.

:I had done most of the art in the original Keen trilogy. With Adrian working on this new set of Keen, his skills honed over many games, the art was looking awesome. ─ Tom Hall

:Deciding on the tilted perspective made things look really cool, but the levels took a lot longer to make. I think the overall art design was a lot cooler, though I have a definite place in my heart for the original Keen development. ─ Tom Hall

It would still take a month and a half before the finished version of Secret of the Oracle was released. In meantime, development of Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter! was starting to pick up and they both ended up getting finished at about the same time, with Secret of the Oracle getting its full release on November 22 and Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter! entering retail stores during very late November. A demo version of Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter! was also released, with three complete levels available for exploring.

The fifth episode, The Armageddon Machine, entered development in mid November. It was finished in a matter of just a single month but despite that it became the favorite episode of many, including Tom Hall. The second series ended up getting released in mid December under the title Commander Keen: Goodbye, Galaxy!.

:We did Keen 4, then Keen 6 (Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter), and then Keen 5. We did Keen 5 in one month. That was an amazing amount of work, but it's probably my favorite Keen, even though it doesn't have a Dopefish! ─ Tom Hall

The CGA versions
An interesting development in the sequel was the availability of CGA versions of each of the episodes. Ironically, the reason why id Software left Softdisk in the first place was the unavailability of their game(s) for CGA platforms. The problem with horizontal smooth scrolling wasn't quite overcome in the sequel either, but due to the significantly more detailed graphics, the jerkiness of the horizontal scrolling wasn't as noticeable.

The CGA versions were released simultaneously with the EGA versions of the games. In the case of Goodbye, Galaxy!, the CGA version was sold separately at a price $5 cheaper than that of the EGA version. For Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter!, both the EGA and CGA versions of the game was included in the retail package.

Despite it initially looking like there would be a market demand for these versions, the CGA specific version of Goodbye, Galaxy! sold very few copies and it was the reason no future Apogee Software games were released with CGA support.

:[Apogee Software] will not support CGA anymore. The CGA version of Goodbye Galaxy showed us that it's a dead market. ─ Scott Miller

Sales numbers
Despite having less bang for the buck with Goodbye, Galaxy! consisting of just two episodes, the initial sales of the sequel were just as good as that of the original trilogy. Tom Hall has expressed regret that they decided to split the third episode into a separate title, thinking that getting two episodes for payment instead of just one could have greatly increased sales.

:We got convinced to make the third game a commercial game, which I think hurt sales of the first two a lot. Getting a trilogy seems great. Getting the second half doesn't seem as cool. They still did decently, though. ─ Tom Hall

Post-release
Updating the game
Just like in the case of the original trilogy, there were also updates produced for the sequels. And similarly, these updates could only be obtained through purchasing new copies of the games since no good patching process had been invented yet. Sadly, The Armageddon Machine had a quite nasty bug in its original release where the secret level would always crash if you played it with the easy difficulty level. For a more specific list of changes made in the patches, see the respective pages for Keen 4, Keen 5 and Keen 6.

Publisher specific versions
There were also publisher specific versions of Goodbye, Galaxy! with at least FormGen Corporation and GT Interactive Software getting their own versions of the game. The version published by GT Interactive was a slightly newer version of the game.

The swastika
Hidden in a secret area of Energy Flow Systems, one can see a swastika in the piping layout. This was a reference to the upcoming title of id Software, Wolfenstein 3D. Later on this causes some unrest among gamers and so it ended up getting censored in the version released by GT Interactive at retail.

:Obviously, it was a reference to Wolfenstein... ? Sure, Keen 5 was created before Wolfy, but we knew that was our next project. ─ John Romero

Bio Menace
The engine used in the three episodes ended up getting reused in another Apogee Software game, Bio Menace.

Removed features
VGA version
As was already mentioned previously, a VGA version boasting 256 color graphics was initially planned to be released. The reason why the VGA version was scrapped quite early in development is unknown.

Sound Blaster soundtrack
A specific Sound Blaster soundtrack was planned for the game that could be enjoyed by gamers having a compatible sound card. Yet for reasons unknown, this also ended up getting dropped.

Desert town
There were plans to include a desert town in the game. Why exactly it ended up removed is not known, but since Keen 4 already has 18 levels, the most likely reason is that the developers felt that there already was more than plenty of levels available in the game.

The dort
Another creature was to be available in Secret of the Oracle, the Dort. The Dorts were apparently cow-like creatures that could be ridden, similarly to the Bounder. It eventually gave way for the Poison Slug. Possibly because its function was deemed too similar to that of the Bounder and it was therefore unnecessary.

A good old kick in the pants in Hillville
Ever wondered from where the title to this music track came from? Here's what Bobby Prince had to say on the matter:

:...there is a level called 'Hillville,' and the first rendition of that level had little guys running around kicking everything in their path. I think these little guys bit the dust before the final release, but they were remembered in this song, as they inspired it. ─ Robert Prince

What these creatures were called and why they were removed is not known, however.

Unused music in The Armageddon Machine
There's an unused piece of music in The Armageddon Machine. It probably ended up being unused simply because the amount of levels available in the episode is relatively small.

Trident power
It seems that originally you were not supposed to find the Wetsuit in order to be able to swim in Secret of the Oracle. There's a mention of trident power being necessary to be able to go underwater in one of the design notes by Tom Hall. Perhaps such a power was seen as being too mythological and was therefore replaced?

Alternate Hillville
If you ever looked at the world map icon of Hillville, you have no doubt noticed that there are a bunch of houses visible. Yet those with a keen eye for detail have no doubt also noticed that there are actually no houses in the level itself. The level data indicates that there have indeed been houses in this level at some point in development, but that they were removed in favor of hills.

Lifewater Oasis
Probably everyone who has played this level more than once has noticed that there are inaccessible scores at the bottom of the level. This is a result of a redesign of the level that occurred during development. The fact that these scores were unreachable after the redesign wasn't noticed by the developers before the game was released.

Commander Keen 0: Part 1 is a Keen 1 mod by ElecDude33.

ElecDude33 has lost access to almost all old data that could help clear up some of the confusion, but were they to find it, some sort of rudimentary "making of" would be a possibility.

A fairly early and amateurish mod from a modder whose efforts to produce more polished later mods have, thus far, failed to result in any finished product. Which is not to say that one won't eventually happen, nor to say that it will.

Level Design
Some levels show repeating patterns in a "more difficult retread of an earlier level"-type style. One of these repeated levels still shows possibly recognisable elements of the first level of the original Marooned on Mars.

Commander Keen 0: Part 1 is a Keen 1 mod by ElecDude33.

ElecDude33 has lost access to almost all old data that could help clear up some of the confusion, but were they to find it, some sort of rudimentary "making of" would be a possibility.

A fairly early and incomplete mod from a modder whose efforts to produce more polished later mods have, thus far, failed to result in any finished product. Which is not to say that one won't eventually happen, nor to say that it will.

Level Design
Some levels show repeating patterns in a "more difficult retread of an earlier level"-type style. One of these repeated levels still shows possibly recognisable elements of the first level of the original Marooned on Mars.

Structure
Besides the 26 letters, SGA uses spaces for its interword separation, and in some occasions a ._. symbol as a full stop. In the Keen 1 level in which most players obtain the pogo stick, a short horizontal dash above a long one appears on either side of the word "POGO", perhaps as quotation marks (though not listed in any of the official translations). No other known punctuation exists. There is also no capitalization, and numbers are also absent. For this reason, numbers are normally spelled out in words.

History
The SGA was created by Tom Hall. Originally for Keen 1 he drew some graphics for 'Exit' signs which he made look a bit more alien by changing the ordinary Latin letters a bit. After that he added other signs saying "hi" and "this is neat" (near Rayguns), and he ended up creating conversions for the other letters of the Latin alphabet in order for the signs to resemble writings in an alien language.

Official Translations
The SGA can be figured out by looking at the many signs throughout the games. While Keen 1 only has 15 letters displayed anywhere (A, B, C, D, E, H, I, K, L, N, O, S, T, X, and Y), later games have more. Keen 3 is particularly helpful, since it has a relatively large number of signs with both SGA and Latin letters.

In Keen 3 a sign with the complete SGA can be found in the secret level, similar to the Rosetta Stone. Another alphabet sign can be found in Keen 6 in the secret Blooglab Space Station level.

The most important message written in SGA is The Mortimer Letter that can be read by the player in the Keen 5 ending sequence.<br style="clear:both" />
Debate
There is some debate over the shape of some of the letters, such as the Z. In the reference translation above (which is remarkably similar to the translation found in Keen 3), it is shown as two vertical bars with a horizontal bar connecting them at the top. In Keen 6, the translation image is much smaller so each "bar" appears only one pixel wide/high. This gives the impression it should be a rounded shape, like an upside down U. However because of the increased resolution in the Keen 3 version, one could argue that it is not supposed to be rounded, otherwise it would contain curves like the letters N and O do (or even the top of the letter A.)

Resources
Fonts
There are a few SGA TrueType fonts available, which allow you to write SGA text quite easily. They all have different names, so it is possible to have all the fonts installed at the same time without any conflicts.

Little Ampton are small purple robots built by the Shikadi to repair, monitor and adjust various machines on the Omegamatic without their direct involvement. They spend their time looking for machines that need adjusting, monitoring or repair, and carrying out these tasks. To aid them a number of poles are available that they can utilise by sliding up or down them, when they do so they will knock off anyone else attempting to use these utility poles. They are delicate and easily stunned by a single shot. (When their eyes then spell 'OH')

On the Shikadi World in Keen GBC there exist a number of robotic beings in the Shikadi cities called Little Amptons. They are built differently to the Keen 5 versions and appear to be a simple prototype. (Or, possibly, of Shikadi invention, the Omegamatic Amptons being enhanced by the Gannalech.) They are small, orange and cube-like, with no limbs. They do not fiddle with switches and are believed to be nothing more than menial workers. They are however, stronger, being unstunnable and faster. Despite being a box, they can still climb poles.

Vortiville is the first level (in the official numbering) in Keen 3. It is an optional level, located in the Vortiville Island, in the Lower Vortiville area. It is near Teleporter 1, which leads to the second area in the island, the Upper Vortiville area. However, it is not necessary to finish this level to get to the teleporter.

Though called "ville", this level consists only of two buildings, which appear to be part of one house. Maybe the name is from the ancient roman term "villa", as in "isolated house or farm in the countryside". The level consists of some outskirts with a little hill, a waterfall and a cliff, and the Vorticon's house. The first building of the house has three floors: the first one has a living room and a kitchen; the second one, a dining room; and the third one, a bedroom, apparently the kids' room, as it has a lot of chocolate and a toy. The second building has two floors: the first one has a garage with an air-car, and the second floor appears to be some kind of workplace.

The Vorticons in this level appear to form a family: there is a Vortimom, three Vortikids, and two Vorticon Grunts; one of them is probably the father, and the other is either the uncle or oldest brother, who lives in the garage.

It is worth noting that at the beginning of the level, Tom Hall's initials are written in SGA with burgers. See also Keen 3 Easter eggs.

They spend most of their time bounding around the planet's surface in a random manner, feeding off any plantlife encountered. Tourists have invented the sport of 'Bounder Racing' where a Bounder is stood on "mounted" and then directed to move in certain directions by leaning forward, backward, etc. It is rapidly increasing in popularity. It takes one shot to stun them permanently.
This is not considered to be a genuine secret level by the majority of the Keen community, as it requires a cheat to enter. Yorps are friendly one-eyed Martians. Physically they resemble Gargs slightly, but they're smaller in size and have one eye on a stalk instead of two. Yorps are very happy, and not dangerous at all. Yorps were slaves to Gargs before the Viking probe landed on the despotic Martian king, freeing them from their masters.

They seem to be suitable for pets, and Keen has actually had one as a pet since his trip to Mars. His pet Yorp is called Spot. The only danger the Yorps represent is that they can accidentally push Keen into something deadly. They move quite slowly and often make small jumps, as if they're excited to be alive. Unlike Gargs, Yorps have only one buck-tooth in their lower jaw giving them quite a cute appearance. No doubt this is why Keen takes one home as a pet at the end of the first episode.

Yorps can be stunned for a few seconds by jumping on them, and it takes one shot to kill them.

Yorps can also be seen on the world map of Keen 6 demo version, probably representing Spot. They're sitting on signs that read "DEMO", presumably to tell the player that the version of the game they are playing is a demo version. Spot does also appear in the stories of Keen 2 and Keen 4.
The Pat Pat is one of only two tile based creatures to be given a name, the other being the Stranded Fish in Keen 3. It frequently appears in Keen 1, usually in little groups. One cannot be certain if it is a plant similar to a Venus Fly Trap or an animal similar to a mussel. Technically it is not a creature but a tile-based hazard which cannot move from the spot where it sits, and this argues for the identification as a plant. However, it should not be forgotten that the biology of Mars is very different from that of the Earth, so it may be neither of the two.

It is not known where the name 'Pat Pat' originated from, possibly due to the creature's opening and closing its mouth.

The creature appears to have more animal characteristics than plant: it is not green, moves rapidly, even without prey and has a tongue. This is not a positive diagnosis however. Pat Pats do not like the cold, and are almost absent near the Mars polar caps. They also dislike darkness.

Fort Vorticon is the ninth level (in the official numbering) in Keen 3. It is an optional level, located in the Military Installation Island, in the same area as Fort Vorticon, Fort Vorta Bella, Fort Vox and Fort Cavort (all of which are optional).

This level appears to be one of the most important military installations of Vorticon VI. It is completely underground and very well hidden, with its main entrance under a waterfall. It also has two missile shafts that can be used as entrances, and one of them is equipped with a missile ready to be fired. The missile is probably used as a defense measure, in case of a massive attack or invasion on Vorticon VI.

The Fort is manned by Vorticon Grunts, and consists of two separate areas: the main missile base, which is reached by the waterfall through a cave-like entrance; and a secondary, much bigger area. The second area is accessible by the second missile shaft, and contains a strong laser defense system. It also contains a pool for Vortikids, and a large system of tunnels leading to the exit. The level also has a small "secret" area on top of the waterfall.

Fort Vorticon is one of the bigger levels of Keen 3, and probably one of the hardest levels in the game.
