Commander Keen - Marooned on Mars (Galaxy Style) is a fan game made in Game Maker. It is a remake of Keen 1.

Story
Aliens from the planet Vorticon VI find out about the eight year-old genius and plan his destruction. While Keen is out exploring the mountains of Mars, the Vorticons steal vital parts of his ship and take them to distant Martian cities! The four parts are the Joystick (for manual flight control), the Car Battery (for electrical systems power), the Vacuum Cleaner (reworked as an ion propulsion unit) and the Everclear (alcohol for fuel) — see Bean-with-Bacon Megarocket for details. Keen must explore the planet, fight the Martians and their robots, find the members of this Vorticon outpost and wrest the parts back from their wicked, clawed hands!
Redfish Elders are the oldest of all of the Redfish that are found during The Sqeek Battle. They lose their spikes, but gain a mouth and tentacles. They resemble jellyfish.

Their body is weaker than all of the younger Redfish, meaning that they can now be shot. They'll sometimes cough out clouds of poison. Only 6 of them are found in the whole game, possibly meaning that Redfish rarely survive to the elder stage, although it is unknown what threatens them during their first two stages.
Redfish Elders are Meep replacements.

NetKeen is a multiplayer fangame created by Lemm by reverse engineering the Keen Galaxy/ Wolf3D code and combining it with the Doom IPX network code. The game supports LAN play and Internet play using DOSBox IPX tunneling for up to 4 players.
Team Deathmatch: 3-4 players compete as a team for a specified number of kills. Teams can be either 2v2, 1v2, or 1v3.

Treasure Race: Players compete to collect the highest point value first. Players can still kill each other, but these do not count directly toward winning. =How to use Netkeen=
There are three steps for starting Netkeen: A) Enabling IPX networking in DosBox; B) Connecting the DosBoxen; and, C) Starting NetKeen

Enabling IPX Networking
In Windows, go to your DosBox installation folder (default Program Files\DosBox v x.xx) and look for a file named DosBox x.xx Options.bat (where x.xx is the version number). Running this batch file opens the dosbox configuration file. Find "ipx" and change ipx=false to ipx=true, then save and exit the text editor. You only need to perform this steps once.

Under Linux, the DosBox configuration file is found in ~/.dosbox/

Connecting the DosBoxes
For network play, one person must start an IPX server with dosbox. Other players will be clients that connect to the server.

Online Games
For online games the server must first forward a UDP port that is to be used for DosBox. On a home network, this is accomplished by logging into the router control panel and forwarding a UDP port between 1024 and 65536 (3140 in this example). For more information on port forwarding for your router, please visit http://www.portforward.com/.

Once you have forwarded UDP port 3140, mount your Netkeen folder in Dosbox. An easy way to do this is to drag and drop a file from your Netkeen folder onto the dosbox icon (do not drag and drop Netkeen.exe, use another file such as egagraph.ck5).

Once dosbox loads, enter at the command line:

ipxnet startserver 3140

Other players can connect to the server by typing at the DosBox command line (after mounting their Netkeen folder):

ipxnet connect <host ip address> 3140

The host can find their ip address on websites such as http://www.whatismyip.com/.

In choosing a server for a 3 or 4 player internet game, the computer which is geographically central is usually the best choice. Server choice can have a dramatic impact on lag, so make sure to try all possibilities.

Visit the DosBox Wiki for more information on IPX networking

Lan Setup
For Lan games, port forwarding is not necessary. The server will enter the same text at the Dosbox command line, excluding the port number:

ipxnet startserver

Other players can connect to the server by typing at the Dosbox command line:

ipxnet connect <host ip address>

In windows, the host's ip address can be found by running a command prompt and typing "ipconfig". The host's ip will be the IPv4 Address in the Local Area Connection section.

Starting Netkeen
Netkeen is started from the command line by typing:

netkeen <switches>

There are several switches required for operation:

-server : Tells the dosbox to act as a game host. ONE, and ONLY ONE player MUST specify this switch! The game host starts the games from the lobby and controls all of the game settings such as victory conditions and levels.

-nodes <number of nodes> : Signifies that you want to play a network game where the number of nodes equals the number of players. By default, a 2 player game is started if the number of nodes is left out.

-ext <game extension> : The extension of the game data (i.e. which episode) you want to play. All parties must use the same extension, or the game will not start. By default, CK5 is used as the extension. Extensions are: CK4, CK5, CK6, and KDR.

Example: play a local game (no opponents) using episode keen 4 files:

netkeen -ext ck4

Example: host a 3 player game for keen 6:

netkeen -server -ext ck6 -nodes 3

Example: join a 3 player game for keen 5:

netkeen -ext ck5 -nodes 3

Creating your own levels
Due to strict memory constraints, levels over 70x70 or containing too many different tiles will not be playable in 4 player games in which each player uses a unique character.

Download the Netkeen Modding and Levelling Package. Then use The Omegamatic to open the gamemaps file and the corresponding tilesets for the episode you wish to mod.

You will notice that despite the folder names, all files use the .ck5 extension. This is because Netkeen uses the Keen 5 engine and file information. Later, when you're ready to test your level, you will change the extension to correspond with the correct episode. For level editing purposes, always make sure the files have the .ck5 extension.

Level editing is basically the same as creating a level in Keen Galaxy. Enemies cannot be placed except for gun turrets, and spawn points can be placed with the numbered helmet sprites (for team 1 and team 2, which act as normal spawners if not a team game).

Important! When you complete your level and want to test it, you will need to combine the tileinfo with the mapfile. Make sure both your maphead.ck5 and keen5-nkX.tli file are in the same folder, where X is the episode number you are using. If you are using Windows, you can combine the files by navigating to your folder in a command prompt and typing:

type maphead.ck5 Keen5-nkX.tli > maphead2.ck5

Then copy the "gamemaps.ck5" and the "maphead2.ck5" to another location to rename. Rename "gamemaps.ck5" to "gamemaps.ckX" where X corresponds to the game episode. Then rename "mapead2.ck5" to "maphead.ckX", again, where X corresponds to the game episode. You can then move these two files to your netkeen game folder to test your levels. All players who wish to test your level will need the gamemaps and maphead files.

For assigning songs to levels, open episode.ckX in a hex editor. The value of the n'th byte will set that song number to the n'th level. Use the music table provided with the editing package to find which values correlate with which song.
* The one-level Keen 1 mod made by Flaose

Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement is a one-level Keen 1 mod made by Flaose. It is supposed to be a recreation of what John Carmack and Tom Hall would have given John Romero as a demonstration of a new game engine for DOS games, the first ever made, that imitated the smooth scrolling engine used by the Nintendo Entertainment System platform. The original was a remake of the first Super Mario Bros. 3 level that used Dangerous Dave's sprites instead of Mario's sprites.

Some two years after the release of this mod, John Romero released the original Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement on his website rome.ro letting the world see for the first time the game that precipitated the creation of id Software.
Patch:Keygem door

Illidan5: link fix

Gem doors require a keygem to open and work in a similar way to switches, by animating tiles with an animate property, but no animation time. While doors can be any height, they must be made of three different tiles by default and will animate four frames. Door sprites control the number of door frames and animation speeds.

There are three kinds of door in Galaxy that Keen can enter. The most common kind are 'passage' doors, allowing Keen to move between two points in the level, found in all Keen Galaxy games. The second kind are keygem doors found in all galaxy games. The third type are V card doors which require a V card to open and usually exit the level.

Number of different tiles in door
As stated above a door is made of three tiles, a top tile, of which there can be as many as desired, a middle and a bottom tile. If a door is made of more or less different tiles 'static tile' errors will occur. It is however possible to patch this. By default a door animates as many top tiles as it find in a vertical column, then will animate two more tiles below it.

<patch title="Keen 4">
#Number of different tiles in door -1
%patch $E002 [$0002W]</patch>

Doors of any (fixed) height or width in Keen 4
This patch alters the door code so that rather than animating special tiles, it copies a block of the level (Both foreground and background) from another location onto the door, much like how Miragia works. It relies on using the EGAGRAPH check skip and so is incompatible with any other patches that use this.

This means that doors can be of any height or width, not just a single column. It also means any tiles may be used in a door, including animating ones and switches. The disadvantage is that all doors in a level will use the same tiles at the same location and so will do the same thing. This means that while doors can do more things, all doors in a level must do the same thing.

Door sprites
Door sprites are invisible metasprite that are created when Keen places a keygem. They animate the door tiles and are then removed. In this respect they are very similar to Miragia sprites. The following is the default action data for all three sprites:

<patch title="Keen 4">
#Door sprite actions:
%patch $3065C [$0000W $0000W] $0000W $0000W $0000W [$000AW] $0000W $0000W
{$0D8F0F85RL}   $00000000L    $00000000L    {$180AW}
%patch $3067A [$0000W $0000W] $0000W $0000W $0000W [$000AW] $0000W $0000W
{$0D8F0F85RL}   $00000000L    $00000000L    {$1828W}
%patch $30698 [$0000W $0000W] $0000W $0000W $0000W [$000AW] $0000W $0000W
{$0D8F0F85RL} $00000000L $00000000L {$0000W}</patch>

As can be seen each patch is one action and there are three of them. Four values per action are highlighted here as they are the most important. The first blue value is the sprite animation, door sprites do not have any, but they may be added if some sort of effect is desired along with the animating tiles. The second is the animation speed, this controls how fast each frame of the door animates (And thus controls the door opening speed.) This can be tweaked for some interesting effects.

The first brown value is the door behavior, this is what makes the tile animate. The second brown value is the next action, by default the first two lead to the next action, the final one is zero or 'remove sprite' This allows you to control the number of frames of door animation there are; making more actions then linking to them will allow more frames, it's even possible to link the last action back to the first in a loop, if the door tiles also loop in their animation then when a gem is placed the door will start animating forever. This allows the use of gems as 'animation activators'

Door actions
The following small patch is the action that is called when doors are opened. If this is set to zero, doors will not open. This can be modified to make custom door opening sequences.

<patch title="Keen 4">
#Gem door first action:
%patch $C349 {$17ECW}</patch>
Krodacia is a distant planet in the Milky Way that is the setting of the Keen 4 mod, The Keys of Krodacia. It is three quarters the size of Earth and is the second out from its star. The majority of the surface is covered in purple grassland, forests of blue leafed trees and jumbo mushrooms, and freshwater lakes. It is home to several intelligent races, most prominently the Krodacians.

Krodacia has access to some technology familiar to both Earth and Vorticon VI which can be seen in the various fortifications, facilities, and residences. Despite these advances, the Krodacians remain largely submerged in the ways of 'magic' and mysticism. This cultural tendency can be observed in the Krodacian temples and aerial cities. During the events of Battle of the Brains, a space station built for genetic experimentation lies in orbit around the planet.

The Krodacians are the dominant race on the planet and divide themselves into two classes: the common Krodacians and the secretive Krodacian Magi. Other creatures of similar and lesser intelligence include the Fat Monks, Magifly, Patsys, and Brombo. With the exception of the Brombo, all of these creatures play a part in Krodacian society.

In The Keys of Krodacia, Mortimer McMire lured Commander Keen here as part of a ruse involving a device known as the Universal Toaster Canon to keep Keen busy while he prepared to destroy the universe.

Calidune is the planet that Keen was shot to at the end of The Keys of Krodacia, and where Dead in the Desert takes place. It is in a faraway corner of the universe, and is mainly Desert-like, with the exception of the Water District near the center of the planet.

Inhabitants
There are various species that live on the planet Calidune, mostly Desert-Based on the surface, however in the water district many are based on water... and cleaning supplies. For more information on all of these, click here.

Topography (the land)
On the western portion of the known surface of the planet, sand covers the land. Major land forms include large dunes, forests of Cacti, and a giant red mountain. The Center of the surface of the planet is covered by massive cone-shaped red rock formations. These are impassible and completely separate the Water Destrict from the Desert. The only way between the two is an underground passage filled with lava. It may be a reference to the underworld- this is especially supported by the level Devil's Cavern. The only way to access this passage is through entrances in some of the Cone formations. The Water District is located on the Eastern portion of the visible surface of the planet. It consists of a large body of water (probably freshwater) that cuts through the desert. Underwater is a massive structure that is likely the working portion of the Water District. To get around this area, elevators are used. Notably, a submarine service runs through the body of water to get to the entrance to the Devil's Cavern. This replaced the satelite used in Keen 6 to get to the Blooglab Space Station.

For more information on these as Levels in the Game, click here.
Buildings and Architecture
There are few buildings on the planet except in the Water District, and these are modeled technollogically, except for the Hydro Palace.

Flora and Fauna
The only real Flora on the planet are cactii and seaweeds. The only fauna is mentioned above.

Other Significance
Calidune was the planet that Keen was beamed to by Mortimer McMire from Krodacia. It was to distract (and/or kill) Keen while Mortimer blew up the Universe.
The Imposter Commander Keen is a Loquax, probably brainwashed by Mortimer McMire to kill Commander Keen, (provided that the rest of Calidune didn't do so first).
From the Official Help File:

This boss monster is similar to the Loquaxes, but with one deadly exception, being that he kills Keen if he touches him. When shot, the ICK will charge in that direction for a period of time, and may stop abruptly, much to the dismay of... well, you!
Spikards are giant, spiked guardians that are located in the four hydro levels, (Hydro Palace, Hydro Corp 1, Hydro Corp 2, Hydro Factory) and guard the high-security portions of the levels. They move very quickly, and bounce off of walls and floors, making them a force to be reckoned with.
Stompers are armless behemoths who survive by stunning prey using their earthquakes, then engulfing the dazed creature (how this is done is not known, since they only have two legs. It is possible they do so in a giraffe-like way). They do not eat Squibs, probably because they have blades in their cranium.
Dead in the Desert is the first complete Keen 6 mod, produced by Ceilick with music composed by Mr.M and ZidaneA. It is the second episode of the unofficial "The Universe is Toast" trilogy, and is often referred to as Keen 8. It was released on July 21, 2009, and a second version on Sept. 14, 2009.

The Story continues where The Keys of Krodacia left off. After falling right into Mortimer McMire's hands, Commander Keen is transported across the universe to the desert planet Calidune. Landing safely on the planet's surface, Keen meets an alien creature who believes himself to be Commander Keen. After a brief argument over their identities, Commander Keen agrees to help the imposter by searching Calidune for a power source in order to power a fake Bean-with-Bacon Megarocket off the planet. This seems to be the only way Keen can escape the planet and stop Mortimer McMire!
Version differences
A second version was released on Sept. 14, 2009 (actually earlier, but it took a few days for Ceilick to fix some bugs that he'd accidentally introduced). List of differences:

*SGA signs for bridges and elevators in the hydro levels for better coordination
*Slight hydro level adjustments
*Boss' stunned body is no longer required to be shot to win
*Removed the giant boulder in boss level
*Lava lake no longer has the shortcut, but the lava falls is more spaced for easier crossing (easier, not easy)
*Giant Cactoid has shorter search period
*Menu now has a notice to look for external help file
*Stompers cause earthquakes, frequently
*The Ceilick replacement can now be found in the secret level
