TheDraw is a text editor for MS DOS to create ANSI and animations as well as ASCII art. This article contains information on how to use this tool with ModKeen and KeenScr to replace the final screen in Keen 4-6, as well as the title in the loading screen for those episodes. Look at the External links section for download links.

Setting up
Extract the contents of the file KeenScr to any folder. It includes the last version of TheDraw, without the other utilities that are not needed for our purposes.

In order to edit the final screen, you need to use ModKeen to extract it. For this example, I will use Keen 6. Extract the Galaxy Mod Kit in the same directory the Keen 6 files, then run the following two lines:

*unlzexe keen6.exe
*modkeen -export -episode=6

ModKeen will extract all the game's resources, but we are only interested in the file 6msc0000.bin, which you should copy to your KeenScr folder.

The file 6msc0000.bin will be exactly 4008 bytes long. Its structure is a 7-byte header, 4000 bytes of data, and the end of file marker.

*Header: FD 00 B8 00 00 A0 0F
*Data: 4000 bytes BSAVE format
*EOF: 1A

You will need to extract the 4000 bytes of BSAVE data in order to edit them with TheDraw. That's what KeenScr will do.

Editing the final screen
KeenScr will strip the Header and EOF byte from the ?msc0000.bin files and load them in TheDraw, reattaching them afterwards. Simply run:

*keenscr 6

And TheDraw will immediately start editing the screen, with the filename keenscr.bin.

Alt+H will display the help screen with all the commands that TheDraw supports; however, its basic use is extremely simple. Use the arrow keys to select where you want to enter text, then type it in. By default, it uses bright white color over black color; you can pick a color straight from the screen by placing the cursor over any character and pressing Alt+U, and it will use that color as you type.

You can use Alt+M to enter drawing mode, where you can use the cursor keys or the mouse to draw on the screen; you should enable Draw mode with the cursor in the place where you want to start drawing, as it will start immediately. Alt+F1 to Alt+F4 will give you different line styles for Draw mode.

Once you are done editing the screen, you can save it by pressing Alt+S. TheDraw will ask which format to save it in; press B to select Binary, and enter the filename keenscr.bin. It's important that you keep this filename (overwriting the existing one) as KeenScr will recreate the original ?msc0000.bin file with it. After you exit TheDraw and KeenScr notifies you that the file has been updated, you can import it back using ModKeen. The file keenscr.bin you edited will remain in the harddisk in case something went wrong, so you don't lose the edited screen.

Editing the loading screen
KeenScr includes the top lines of the loading screen for Keen 4-6 for easy editing; they are named ck?load.bin. If any of them is missing, you will get black space instead of the part of the loading screen for that episode, but everything else will work fine. Simply run:

*keenscr load

The program will create a combined keenscr.bin file with the data of all three files, allowing you to edit them all at once, then run TheDraw.

Make your modifications to the screen, and then save it as keenscr.bin overwriting the generated file. You must save it in Binary format when TheDraw asks.

Once you are done editing, exit TheDraw and KeenScr will load the screen you saved and write back the separate ck?load.bin files.

The file keenscr.bin will remain in the harddisk in case something went wrong, so you don't lose the edited screen.

In order to apply the screen to your mod, use one of the following
lines in your patch file (they are all for v1.4)

*%patchfile $1fe47 ck4load.bin

*%patchfile $20cd7 ck5load.bin
*%patchfile $1fca7 ck6load.bin

TheDraw is a text editor for MS DOS to create ANSI and animations as well as ASCII art. This article contains information on how to use this tool with ModKeen to replace the final screen in Keen 4-6. This article assumes you have downloaded the Galaxy Mod Kit, which includes UNLZEXE and ModKeen.

Setting Up
In order to edit the final screen, you need to use ModKeen to extract it. For this example, I will use Keen 6. Extract the Galaxy Mod Kit in the same directory the Keen 6 files, then run the following two lines:

*unlzexe keen6.exe
*modkeen -export -episode=6

ModKeen will extract all the game's resources, but we are only interested in the file 6msc0000.bin, which you should copy to your TheDraw folder.

File Format
The file 6msc0000.bin will be exactly 4008 bytes long. Its structure is a 7-byte header, 4000 bytes of data, and the end of file marker.

* Header: FD 00 B8 00 00 A0 0F
* Data: 4000 bytes BSAVE format
* EOF: 1A

You will need to extract the 4000 bytes of BSAVE data in order to edit them with TheDraw.

Editing
Once you have extracted the screen data and saved it to a .bin file, you can start TheDraw by entering thedraw filename.bin in the command line. It is important that the filename keeps the extension .bin so TheDraw recognizes the data. TheDraw will display the line: Binary Block Load. Enter width of block (1-80, defaults 80):, simply press Enter and your screen will load.

Importing
Once you are done editing the screen, you can save it by pressing Alt+S. TheDraw will ask which format to save it in; press B to select Binary, and enter a filename such as myscreen.bin. The file you just saved will be 16000 bytes long, but you only need the first 4000 bytes. Simply reattach the 7-byte header and the EOF byte, and you will have a 4008-byte file ready to replace the original 6msc0000.bin.

TED5 is a 16-bit DOS game level editor written by John Romero. It was originally used for making levels for the Keen: Galaxy trilogy, Bio Menace and Rise of the Triad.

Installing
The best way to obtain TED is by downloading the Galaxy Mod Kid, which includes TED5 as well as other utilities that you will need to create and run your own levels. It is recommended that you run TED5 using DosBox, both for compatibility reasons and because DosBox allows you to slow down the program, which helps scroll around the level at a reasonable speed.

Setting Up
Once you have unpacked the contents of the Galaxy Mod Kit to a folder, you will need to copy the game you want to edit to the same directory. For this example I will use Keen 5; the procedure is the same for all games. Once you have all the Galaxy Mod Kit and the Keen 5 files in the same directory, you will need to uncompress the Keen 5 executable. Do that by opening DosBox in that folder and entering UNLZEXE KEEN5E.EXE to unpack it. Afterwards, run TEDSETUP, which will extract some data from the game so TED can edit its maps. Once that is done, type TED5 and the editor should start.

User Interface
After dismissing the welcome screen, the first thing you will want to do is press F9, or click the ? menu and select Video Mode Switch. That will cause TED to run in 640x480 mode, giving you more space to work with. You can switch to the low resolution mode again anytime you want to make sure how much of the level is going to be displayed on the game at once.

At the bottom of the screen you will see the Info Bar. From left to right, it displays:

* Selected Background tile.
* Selected Foreground tile.
* Selected Icon.
**These items display the icon as a graphic, followed by the tile number in hexadecimal (like $00AE) and decimal (174). Clicking on any of them will bring up the Tiles palette so you can select a new one.
* Name of the level.
**This name is used internally and not displayed in the game at any point.
* Active layers (B, F, I)
**This is the layer where you will be adding new tiles to. You can select more than one and the selected tiles will all be placed, however it is recommended that you work only one layer at a time.
* Visible layers (b, f, i)
**Hidden layers will immediately deactivate so you don't place items in them by mistake. This allows you to take a closer look at a specific layer to make sure everything is placed correctly.
* Curson location (X, Y)
**This will also be given in both decimal and hexadecimal numbers. You will need those numbers in order to have switch that activate lifts, doors leading to other places, toggling bridges, and more.

Using TED
By default, TED will load the world map for the game. In order to switch to another map, you will need to click the File menu and select Edit New Map. You will then be able to select any of the maps in the game. For this example, pick Ion Vent System, the first level of Keen 5.

You can use the cursor keys to scroll the level around. This is where DosBox comes in handy: on a current system, even the slightest touch of the cursor keys will scroll the entire level, giving you no control of where you land. DosBox, however, allows you to control the speed of the simulation: use Ctrl+F11 to slow it down, and Ctrl+F12 to speed it up. Around 5000 CPU Cycles will give you a good drawing speed at 640x480 resolution; if you prefer to exit at 320x200, around 1500 CPU Cycles will do the trick.

You can toggle the active layers (the layer where you will add new tiles to) by pressing the 1, 2 and 3 keys; notice the change in the Info bar as you do that. You can toggle the visible layers by pressing the 4, 5 and 6 keys; this will allow you to take a closer look at a specific layer to make sure everything is placed properly.

Adding new tiles to the level is as simple as hovering your mouse over the level and left-clicking. The currently selected tiles will be placed in all active layers. You can select tiles in three ways:

* Clicking the tile icon to the left of the Info Bar,
* Pressing the Space bar to bring up the Tile palette,
* Or Right-clicking an existing tile.

Right-clicking an existing tile will switch all the active tiles to the ones in the active layers. This means, if you only have the Icon layer active, right-clicking a tile with a Sparky will only select the Sparky; while if you have all three layers active, it will select the Sparky, the Foreground tile, and the Background tile at that location.

Playing Maps
You can save your map at any time by going to the File menu and selecting Save Map; however, in order to actually play the level, you will need to Carmacize Maps. This will recompress the maps into a format the game can understand, and it can take a long time to complete. Increase your DosBox CPU Cycles a lot here in order to make it finish faster.

Once Carmacize Maps is done, it will ask if you want to print a report on lengths. In DosBox, clicking Yes will display the information in your screen on top of TED; you will need to press F9 twice to force an screen refresh. You can now exit TED in order to test your level in the game.

TEDSETUP created a small file which will load your edited maps back into the game and start it. Run it by typing GO5 and it will load Keen with your edited maps.
**This is the layer where you will be adding new tiles to. You can select more than one and the selected tiles will all be placed, however it is recommended that you work only one layer at a time.
* Visible layers (b, f, i)
**Hidden layers will immediately deactivate so you don't place items in them by mistake. This allows you to take a closer look at a specific layer to make sure everything is placed correctly.
* Curson location (X, Y)

On game engine names
In the modding tools section of the main page, it is stated: "Other (Keen Dreams, non-Keen engines)", but we are all pretty sure Keen Dreams engine and Keen: Galaxy engine are almost the same! Both share the EGAGRAPH and GAMEMAPS format, and the game engine technology such as goplats (minecart in KDR seems to be one), poles, hanging onto ledges, etc. So, in my opinion, the K: Modding tools classification should be fixed as this needs to be discussed before breaking all existing links. There are already three Keen Dreams modding tools, which are unofficial ModKeen 2.0.1 hack by MultiMania, KDRPatch by MultiMania and TED5 by John Romero. --Shadow Master 17:53, 5 July 2007 (GMT)
:The engines are indeed similar, but as far as I'm aware you can't take a Keen 4-6 modding tool (like the original ModKeen for example) and use it unchanged with Keen Dreams. That's why the categories are separate. A Keen4 modding tool will work with Keen5, but not necessarily with Dreams. -- Malvineous 09:29, 10 July 2007 (GMT)
Colour vs Color
Game Boy Colour should, I think be spelt Game Boy Color, in the American spelling. (Or am I just being an ignorant American?) -- CK Guy
:I don't know, over here in Australia that's the way it's spelt, but I guess you could argue it was an American invention so it should be spelt its native tongue. My argument is that the wiki generally uses British English, so it should remain as is. -- Malvineous 23:49, 9 February 2007 (GMT)
Right now, a lot of user's pages are written from the user's POV ("Hi, I'm n,..." etc.), but I think that they should be written more like every other page. --Genius314 21:41, 11 June 2007 (GMT)
:::That's the real purpose of user pages though, you're supposed to write them yourself in your own style. They wouldn't really suit the article style, as there are people in the Keen community that don't have a user page on the wiki. From a different angle, can you think of any reason why we'd need a specific article about someone? ::::::::::: The thing is, unless it's an experienced user who has learned some wikicode, nobody should edit and/or create new templates. That should be so because of (for me, at least) obvious reasons. Besides, as this wiki is powered by the MediaWiki software, is the preview button doesn't work for templates, it's them (the MediaWiki developers) who you should complain to, not us, mere users of the software. --Shadow Master 15:42, 13 August 2007 (GMT)

:::::::::::And the flaw in Xterra's explanation? Templates only work when they're saved in their own article (you can't put template code in a Sandbox, it doesn't work.) You can fiddle with the wikicode using the Preview button (of which I'm beginning to suspect you don't know how it works), so even if we did have a Sandbox you couldn't use it when developing templates (trust me, Grafix and I developed and tested the Infobox templates on this wiki using the Preview button, with a few unavoidable edits, which wouldn't work in a Sandbox anyway since you can't include the Sandbox in the same way as you include templates.) I suggest you learn how the Preview button works, because then you'll realise that anything you can do in a Sandbox can be done by just previewing an edit. -- Malvineous 22:21, 13 August 2007 (GMT)
:::::::::::::Haha :-) Don't forget that you can't really clean out the sandbox, because all the edit history will still be there on the history tab. At any rate, anyone who needs a sandbox is probably too inexperienced to contribute meaningful information - they can learn on one of the hundreds of other wikis out there and then return when they no longer need a sandbox. -- Malvineous 10:49, 14 August 2007 (GMT)
I have at last upgraded the KeenWiki to the latest version of MediaWiki. I have also included some additional JavaScript to force people to use edit summaries, so because it hasn't been extensively tested please let me know if anyone runs into problems. I've also included a basic Captcha when signing up for a new account, to hopefully reduce the number of spam accounts. I'll also be deleting any accounts that look like spam soon, so my apologies if I delete a real person's account :-) -- Malvineous 04:01, 6 October 2007 (GMT)
:That forced summary thing. It's kind of annoying on talk pages. Would this be easy to change? (Would you find it desirable to change?) -- CK Guy 21:26, 1 November 2007 (GMT)
::That's a fair point. If you can see this message then the summary is now optional on Talk pages. -- Malvineous 01:04, 3 November 2007 (GMT)

The Keys of Krodacia is the first complete Keen 4 mod, produced by Ceilick with music composed by Keenrush. It is the first episode of the unofficial The Universe Is Toast trilogy. It was released in June 2006.

The story begins immediatly where Keen 6 left off. Upon returning to Earth, Billy asked Molly if it would be alright to browse through Mortimer's room, as there could be clues to Mortimer's plans. Persuading her that preventing the destruction of the Universe was more important than her brother's privacy, Billy found a video tape on Mortimer's desk with a label in Standard Galactic Alphabet. The tape contained a message from Mortimer, giving Billy a clue that the Universal Toaster Cannon was being built in the world of Krodacia.

On Krodacia, Commander Keen found a gigantic structure with only one entrance at the bottom, locked with seven keys. It's up to Keen to find the seven keys to get into Mortimer's base, and stop the Universal Toaster Cannon!
