This Defense Tunnel blocks access to [[Brownian Motion Inducer]]. As with most Defense Tunnels aboard the Omegamatic, the level's layout is mostly horizontal, going in this case from right to left.
'''Defense Tunnel Vlook''' is a level in [[Keen 5]], one of the four Defense Tunnels in the second area of the [[Omegamatic]].

This Defense Tunnel blocks access to [[Energy Flow Systems]]. As with most Defense Tunnels aboard the Omegamatic, the level's layout is plainly horizontal. After opening the security door at the exit (which requires a [[keycard (Omegamatic)|keycard]]), [[Keen]] gains access to Energy Flow Systems.

Enemies in this level include [[Sparky|Sparkies]], [[Little Ampton]]s, [[Spindred]]s, and [[Slicestar]]s. There is a single [[Robo Red]] near the entrance in Normal and Hard difficulty levels.

== Miscellaneous Info ==

* One of the game automatic demo sequences takes place in this level.
* There are a total of '''98,400 points''' in here. That means 74 Shikadi Gums, 25 Marshmallows, 2 Chocolate Milks, 14 Tart Stixes, 18 Sugar Stoopies Cereals and 7 Bags O' Sugar (7,400 + 5,000 + 1,000 + 14,000 + 36,000 + 35,000 = 98,400).

SodiumtheGlitcher: /* Beating levels while dead */ Redirected to the Keen 4 page for consistency with other bugs

This page lists all the bugs, odd behaviours and unexpected actions that have been discovered in [[Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine|Keen 5]].

== Die but win ==
[[Image:K5 bug Die but win.gif|frame|Keen gets hit by the explosion of a [[Shikadi Mine]].]]

This is probably the most commonly seen trick. If, at the end of Keen 5 in the [[Quantum Explosion Dynamo]] Keen is too close to the [[Shikadi Mine]] he is using to destroy it, he will be killed along with the Q.E.D. However, the game will then end with Keen unharmed and victorious. Likewise, it is possible to break a fuse but still be killed by an enemy, and win the level.

<br style="clear: both;" />
== Shelley/Door Trick ==

This trick allows you to warp to the secret level from level 10, the [[Brownian Motion Inducer]]. It only works in [[Keen 5 Versions|version 1.4]], as this is the only version in which the [[Shelley]]s can push Keen.

# Start a game in Hard mode.
# Go to the Brownian Motion Inducer (The North globe level.)
# Make it to the area with the long hallway, where there are three small rooms above you with doors in them.
# In one of the small rooms, have a shelley push you towards the door. (Make sure you kill the [[Sparky]] first!).
# As you go past the door, press up, as if you were going to enter it. If done with correct timing, you should go through the door, and warp to [[Korath III Base]].
#* Alternatively, you can have the Shelleys on the right ledges push you while they jump down; this works on any difficulty.

This trick can be used in speed runs to get through the game incredibly fast. It allows you to skip 6 levels (3 [[Defense tunnel]]s and 3 Machine levels), since the secret level will then warp you up to the area where the last two levels are.

== Ampton Pole Push Door Trick ==

Warping to the secret level from any door can also be achieved by having a [[Little Ampton]] push you off a pole while still or climbing up on the pole, then going through a door without climbing any other poles. This can be exploited e.g. in the first level (seen [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZX8x0lMp94&t=6s here]).

This happens because an animation control variable for Keen is mistakenly left at an inappropriate value when you leave a pole without dismounting it the normal way, which causes Keen's door-walking animation to play incorrectly, in turn causing the engine to look up the destination of the door incorrectly. Sprites in Keen have a "Y direction" property, which controls the direction of motion in some animations, such as pole-climbing. Keen's Y direction is normally set to 1, but the pole-climbing code sets it to 0 when Keen is still on a pole, and -1 when Keen is climbing up a pole. If you are pushed off a pole, the normal pole-dismounting code that resets Keen's Y direction to 1 does not run. This ends up cancelling out the Y-shift in Keen's door walking animation, so he does not walk "up" one tile as he's supposed to when he enters the door (you can see this in the YouTube clip linked above). When the engine looks up the destination of the door tile Keen overlaps, it ends up looking at a tile one tile below the tile that actually records the door's destination. The erroneous door destination value it gets back is 0, which happens to be the value hard-coded in the engine to indicate a warp to Korath III.

== Exit Omegamatic ==

[[Image:Keen5_Outside.png|frame|Outside the [[Omegamatic]].]]

This is probably the least known bug in the game. It allows you to walk around in space outside the [[Omegamatic]] in the map level.

# Start out by getting to the last level, the [[Quantum Explosion Dynamo]].
# On the map level, stand over to the very right side, against the wall of the tunnel. Stand right outside the globe. Enter the level.
# Die. This is probably quickest by running into the [[Spindred]]s up above where you start.
# Choose to return to the Omegamatic.
# If done correctly, you should be halfway inside the wall of the tunnel. Just move to the right to get out, or remain idle until Keen does his waving animation, which will cause him to be displaced some distance out of the wall. Be warned: You cannot get back into the Omegamatic once you do this (unless you use cheats).

This cannot do anything for you, not even getting to the secret level. It is just a fun trick that allows you to see all of the map, including the yellow around the outside.

This trick can also be done in the [[Regulation Control Center]], and possibly the other domes, due to their odd collision boxes.

== Secret Elevator ==

[[Image:Keen5_Secret_Elevator.png|thumb|320px|Secret Elevator outside the [[Omegamatic]].]]

There is a secret bug elevator hidden outside of the map.

# First, use the above bug (Exit Omegamatic) to get outside.
# Now, go up to the yellow at the top of the map.
# Go over to about where the left corner of the map is, and walk up near the top edge.
# Somewhere around here, if you try and walk north, you will "walk into" an elevator, and disappear. This will freeze the game, so you should probably use DOSbox to do it.

This bug is caused by the fact that the game code requires the elevator tiles to be placed in the top of the map, above the view of the player. Although you cannot see the actual tiles, you can still walk into them, causing the player to enter a non-existent elevator.
<br style="clear: both;" />

== Fuse Structure Typo ==

[[Image:Fuse_sign.png|thumb|320px|The sign in question.]]

The "Warning: Fuse Structure Fragile" actually reads "Warning: Fuse '''Strcture''' Fragile"

# Enter the [[Regulation Control Center]] or [[Energy Flow Systems]].
# Read the sign by the fuse.

The sign is also in [[Brownian Motion Inducer]], but the part of the sign where the typo occurs is obscured by the machine.
<br style="clear: both;" />

== Typo in High Scores entrance ==

[[Image:Keen5_Lev15Typo.png|thumb|320px|High Scores level entry text typo.]]

The [[High Scores (Keen 5 Level)|High Scores level]] is inaccessible from the world-map; however, there are four alternative ways to reach it (see the aforementioned link).

When using two of the methods (level warp cheat and [[TED5|TEDLEVEL]] command line), you will see the entrance text for each level. In the particular case of the High Scores level, there is a typo (an absent space between "the" and "High") in the text, which might not be considered a true bug as this text was never supposed to be shown to the player.
<br style="clear: both;" />

== Lure Robo Red off a ledge ==

[[Image:K5 bug Robored off a ledge.gif|thumb|320px|[[Robo Red]] is a bit lost.]]

[[Robo Red]] can be lured off the edge of a ledge by getting its attention at just the right moment. The best way to do it is to shoot it right when it is on the edge. Robo Red always moves a certain distance after it shoots (so be careful) in the direction its attention is focused to, and it seems on those occasions the game does not check whether the next tile on the robot's path is solid or not, and thus the robot may end up in air. It can be moved further by shooting it more. In the air it appears to be twisting because on its both sides the tiles are non-solid, which usually tells it it is time to turn around, which it does now too, but cannot find solid land on the opposite direction either, turning around again, and so on.

* There is a YouTube video showing [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojtqq4IX0RI Robo Red being lured off a ledge]
<br style="clear: both;" />

== Do not fall off a rotating block ==

[[Image:ImmuneToGravity-Up.gif|frame|Do not look down!]]

Certain actions of Keen's are immune to gravity. If Keen is looking up or down or ledgegripping, he cannot fall. Looking up on a rotating block will allow Keen to stay on it when it flips. If he then stops looking up when the block is flat, he can stand normally on the block when it spins until his "bored" animations start.

See also: [[Immune to gravity]]

<br style="clear: both;" />

== Trapped Secret Area ==

[[Image:Bug_Def_Tunnel_Sorra.png|frame|The secret area in question, in version 1.4 (Apogee, left) and version 1.4 (GT Interactive Software, right)]]

At the end of [[Defense Tunnel Sorra]] is a small secret area next to a ceiling-mounted laser cannon; jumping correctly will allow Keen to climb inside the wall to collect some points, but it is impossible to get out again without cheating.

In version 1.4 (GT Interactive Software), the secret area was changed to allow Keen to drop down to the exit door behind the yellow key gem door. Though, Keen could still get trapped if he does not have the [[Keycard (Omegamatic)|keycard]] and/or did not open the yellow gem door beforehand.

<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Shelley-ular errors ==

[[Image:Keen5 ShelleyBug.png|thumb|320px|Keen pushed a Shelley of its platform.]]

There are two different clipping errors having to do with [[Shelley]]s. One, you can force a Shelley to freeze itself onto a slanted platform:
# Go to the top of [[Neutrino Burst Injector]] in Hard mode, then get a Shelley on screen.
# Stand on a slanted part of the floor and wait.
# The Shelley will collide with you, then freeze with its leg in the platform. This makes it easy to jump over the Shelley.

Two, you can force a Shelley off an edge and in some conditions, like the top of the machine in [[Brownian Motion Inducer]], onto a different ledge ([http://home.mchsi.com/~bootsisbig/keen5e_000.avi video]):
# Make the Shelley stand on an edge, stand behind it and wait for it to reverse direction.
# The Shelley will be a bit off its platform. Push it gently to make it go farther. If you do it for a long time, the Shelley may make it onto another ledge and start walking normally there.

<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Keen appears in front of foreground ==

[[Image:Keen5_PoleBug.png|frame|Keen appears in front of the green foreground tiles.]]

If a moving platform touches the player while performing the ledge climbing animation, Keen will be made visible above all foreground tiles. Keen returns to normal rendering when completing the ledge climbing animation without being pushed by a moving platform, or after going through a door.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Unobtainable candy ==

[[Image:Candybug.png‎|thumb|320px|Unobtainable candy, highlighted with patches.]]

In [[Defense Tunnel Teln]], there is a secret passage containing four pieces of candy. Only three of these are obtainable, the fourth is in a solid tile. This is impossible to see without patches.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Spindred Trap ==

[[Image:SpindredTrap.png‎‎|thumb|320px|Trapped Spindred.]]

In the [[Quantum Explosion Dynamo]] (and maybe some other stages), it's possible to trap the two hazardous [[Spindred]]s by flicking the switch at the right time; flicking enough times will result in them being trapped in the left side of the pit, where they become more of a nuisance then a hazard. This bug involves the Spindred's collision properties, but because a wall suddenly appears, it will slide off to one side, in the same manner as Keen when no-clip is suddenly turned off when he is in a wall.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Pole bug in Security Center ==

[[Image:Keen5_Glitch.png|thumb|320px|Multiple tile bug in the [[Security Center|Security Center]].]]

In the [[Security Center]], there are three tile errors in how the level is put together, which was missed by the level designers.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Tile bug in Korath III Base ==

[[Image:Korathbug.png‎‎|thumb|320px|The single tile bug in the [[Korath III Base|Korath base]].]]

In the secret [[Korath III Base]], there is a single tile error in how the level is put together, which was missed by the level designers.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Unfinished Slope Ceilings ==

[[Image:Keen5_Tile_Bug.png|thumb|320px|Unsloped Ceiling.]]

Throughout the entire game there are tiles with wrong back and foreground information. Exemplary this can be spotted in the fifth level ([[Defense Tunnel Burrh]]). Over there some ceiling slopes appear to be in the background but need to be in the foreground. Furthermore some of them are, for some reason, not sloped at all. Mainly this occurs with tiles having a 45 degree angle.

<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Keen Ampton Push Glitch ==

If Keen is placing a [[Gems|gem]], he can be pushed off the gem holder. When this happens he is no longer on the right tile to place the gem and is stuck in his 'gem placing' behavior, with the player being utterly unable to control him. This can be done by any sprite that can push the player, such as a platform or [[Little Ampton]]. Notably, Keen does not respond to gravity in this position and so can be pushed off slopes into midair. Similarly, Keen 'slides' to align himself with the keyholder, so if pushed off at the right time will slide around the level by himself.

The player can regain control if Keen is killed, placed on a moving platform, hits a wall or is pushed back onto the gem holder. (This doesn't have to be the same gem holder he was on; if he places a red gem, is interrupted and then pushed onto a green gem holder he will open the green door, losing a green gem.)

In the example shown here a [[Little Ampton]] pushed the player off the keyholder, which resulted in them sliding left, up the slope. On reaching the top of the slope they reversed direction, moving through the air until they hit a wall (the door) which reset Keen. God mode was enabled for this, but is not necessary.
[[Image:Keen_ampton_push_glitch.png|thumb|640px|Hovercraft Keen!]]
<br style="clear:both;"/>

== Keen floating ==

[[Image:Keen-levitating.png|thumb|320px|Keen floating.]]

In the Middle-Right section of the [[Gravitational Damping Hub]], there are four lifts that pass directly above a pole. If Keen jumps onto the pole as the lift passes over and the up arrow key is held, Keen will levitate near the top of the pole, however if Keen grabs the pole after touching the lift without holding the up arrow key, he will simply be pushed off and fall. If, after using this glitch, Keen enters a door without climbing any other poles, he will enter the door one tile too low, and teleport to [[Korath III]].

[[User:SupFanat|SupFanat]] ([[User talk:SupFanat|talk]]) 23:49, 12 June 2026 (GMT)
"If Keen flips the switch to move the first platform up to the red door, flips it off once it's passed him, and falls to the bottom of the level, the level cannot be completed without cheating because the platform will not come back down to the floor and Keen cannot get back up to the platform. If Keen is playing on Easy, then there's no way to die and Keen must either load a game, start a new one, or use the Impossible Bullet to get back up. If Keen is playing on Normal and has already stunned the Ceilick, he's stuck. If Keen is playing on Hard, he can die to a Gik on the lowest floor."
To clarify it all - "If Keen is playing on Normal and has already stunned the Ceilick, he's stuck" then everything about loading the game, starting new game or using Impossible Bullet applies the same way as in Easy game. Also, in some cases, Keen may be able to die in Normal game too if Gik falls to the lowest area.

:That is correct, but I'm not going to add that info as it should be obvious to the player, and the page is getting very cluttered. [[User:SodiumtheGlitcher|SodiumtheGlitcher]] ([[User talk:SodiumtheGlitcher|talk]]) 02:04, 13 June 2026 (GMT)

::::What do you think of that? Previously I made the images alternate left/right so that they'd be shown next to their articles, but perhaps that layout isn't for everyone. I've since discovered how useful <code><nowiki><br&nbsp;style="clear: both;"&nbsp;/></nowiki></code> is, so I used that to move all the pictures over to the right, while keeping them next to the relevant explanation. -- [[User:Malvineous|Malvineous]] 07:50, 13 July 2007 (GMT)
== Bloogville - way to get trapped at the lower part of the level (near the beginning) ==

[[User:SupFanat|SupFanat]] ([[User talk:SupFanat|talk]]) 09:18, 29 April 2026 (GMT) Turn on the second switch for a moving platform near the beginning which leads the moving platform further up - to the red gem door. Then while the moving platform is located above the top of its path from its original way between lowest part of level and the first two passages upwards, turn it back off. Then the moving platform will move only in the top of its path. Now if you fall down, you are stuck there with only way upwards - die and restart the level - or (if you killed all the mortal enemies and no immortal Gik fell down), you can only use Impossible Bullet to go up again - or if you ran out of ammo too, then it's dead end.

[[User:SupFanat|SupFanat]] ([[User talk:SupFanat|talk]]) 09:49, 29 April 2026 (GMT) Addition: in Hard Game, there is a Gik at the beginning of this level, thus this bug doesn't apply to Hard Game in the most troublesome form (dead end) - it's always possible to die by colliding with Gik (as it turns itself) and restart the level

:This seems less like a bug and more like a design oversight. There shouldn't be any reason why the player would do this, but it is possible. The fact that it softlocks you on easier difficulties makes it even more of an oversight because the developers didn't put any enemies in the bottom section, so I don't think it should go in the bugs page. I'll add it to Bloogville's Wiki page, though. [[User:SodiumtheGlitcher|SodiumtheGlitcher]] ([[User talk:SodiumtheGlitcher|talk]]) 15:23, 29 April 2026 (GMT)

== OS Compatible ==

Most of the above listed tools are written for [[wikipedia:MS-DOS|MS-DOS]] or [[wikipedia:Microsoft Windows|Windows]] based systems. The bracketed ancillary information show for which operating system ([[wikipedia:Operating system|OS]]) these tools are meant to be. To run these applications one could use the native system they are based on. Alternatively there are ways of emulating the needed OS. For eg. MS-DOS based tools can be run via [[wikipedia:DOSBox|DOSBox]].

For Linux users (Mac-OS?) the usability differs for each application. Those might be either compatible, portable or provide another ability to run them like compiling the source code on a Linux based system. The following footer texts explain the needed requirements:

* '''CLI''': Tool is command line based.
* '''DOS''': Tool is originally written for a MS-DOS environment and can be emulated by using [[Keen in Linux|DOSBox]].
* '''Port''': A Linux port for this Tool exists.
* '''Source Code''': The source-code is available within the download package and can be compiled.
* '''Win32''': Tool is native Windows tool. It might be compatible with WINE.
* '''WINE''': Tool is a standalone application which just needs the WINE program starter to work properly.

Alternative one could use a Virtual machine to simply emulate the needed Operating System. There are several options to choose from. The most popular might be [[wikipedia:Virtual Box|Virtual-Box]], [[wikipedia:VMware Workstation|VMware Workstation]] or [[wikipedia:QEMU|QEMU]].

== Game Information ==

* For details on the file formats used by the games, see the [[ModdingWiki:Commander Keen 4-6|Commander Keen 4-6]] section on the ModdingWiki.
* There is a [[:Category:Patches|list of patches]] that can be incorporated into mods to change the game's behaviour.
== OS Compatible ==

== Game Information ==

SodiumtheGlitcher: /* Duplicating Flower Pellets */ Fixed wikicode typo

This page lists all the bugs, odd behaviours and unexpected actions that have been discovered in [[Keen Dreams]].

== Jumping through dangers ==
When you find [[Keen Dreams Hazards|fire or radioactive floors]], you can pass them unharmed by holding the jump key when hitting the ground (you can hold the key several seconds before landing, so no hurry) — and [[Commander Keen|Keen]] will bounce up normally. Remember to release the jump key between every bounce and then press it again before landing again.

== Climbing up nothing ==
[[Image:Climbing_air.png|thumb|320px|Climbing thin air after being pushed away from pole by a [[Canteloupe Cart]].]]
If you are on a pole and a [[Canteloupe Cart]] pushes you off, you will be dragged along while in the climbing position. If you then proceed to move upwards, you will escape the [[Canteloupe Cart]] but climb an invisible pole afterwards. You can climb as high or as low as the original pole goes, passing straight through any solid tiles along the way, though enemies will still kill you. The only place this can be done is alongside the right edge of [[The Melon Mines]], as it is the only place in the game with both [[Canteloupe Cart]]s and poles nearby.
<br style="clear: both;"/>

== Quick level exits ==
[[Image:kd_quick_exit.png|right|frame|[[Keen]] takes an unusual shortcut in [[Apple Acres]].]]
If there is no wall in your way, go against the right edge of the level, and die! If [[Keen]]'s head goes through the right edge of the screen, you will complete the level.
<br style="clear: both;"/>

== Dropping enemies ==
[[Image:Dropping_carrot.png|thumb|320px|[[Keen]] dropping a [[Carrot Courier]] out of [[Horseradish Hill]].]]
It is possible to make [[Squasher]]s jump off cliffs out of the level, thus "killing" them; this can be done especially well in [[Squash Swamp]]. In [[Horseradish Hill]] you can "kill" all five [[Carrot Courier]]s by shooting them as they jump cliffs.

It is also possible to stun enemies with [[Flower Power]]s so that they fall off logs, lily pads or other "one way up" tiles (tiles permitting movement in a single direction only). Any enemy can be manipulated in this manner. The trick is to shoot them just as they reach the very edge of the platform; the stunned sprite has different clipping and will fall off the platform. For some other enemies, the sprite will only fall off after it has reverted back to its original shape. This can be used to "push" several enemies off of the bottom of the level, though with difficulty:
* The simplest way to do it is to stand under the platform edge and throw [[Flower Power]]s up into the air just past the platform's edge.
* It is also possible to stand on the platform and shoot an enemy off, though this requires very good timing.
* A third possibility is to [[Keen Dreams Cheats|cheat]] and stand at the platform's edge with [[God mode]] and toss [[Flower Power]]s into the air. With this, it is even possible to make enemies fall off the level boundaries.

== Duplicating Flower Pellets ==
Sometimes, when rapidly firing your [[Flower Power]]s against a wall close enough to bounce the pellet back to you (and going back into your inventory), it will count the pellet twice. This is hard to duplicate, but could potentially help you out in a tight situation.

This can also be done by looking up and throwing [[Flower Power]]s in the air rapidly.

== Flying slowly ==
If you turn on the [[Keen Dreams Cheats|Jump cheat]] and fly up, throw a [[Flower Power]] straight up. [[Keen]] will continue flying upwards but slower. Throwing again will cause [[Keen]] to stop and fall down but slowly. Throwing a [[Flower Power]] for the third time will cause [[Keen]] to fall down with normal speed.

== Jump down from exit sign ==

The exit sign's bottom tiles are one way up, meaning that [[Keen]] can jump down when he is behind the exit sign. See a video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUzuVyLcuNU here].

== Super easy difficulty ==

If the player starts playing by loading a saved game and does this without having started a new game or loaded a previous game (that is, the first thing they do is load a game) then that game will have 'zero difficulty' instead of the difficulty level it had when saved. If the game is saved again this difficulty level will become permanent.

In practice a difficulty level of 0 is identical to that of 1 (easy), so this is only noticeable when restoring normal or hard games. It does however allow the addition of a hypothetical fourth difficulty to the game. To avoid this the player should always start a new game before restoring an old one.

== Dropping through a ramp in Horseradish Hill ==
[[Image:kd_drop_through_hh.png|right|frame|[[Keen]] drops down through the ramp.]]
On the last downhill ramp by the end of [[Horseradish Hill]], you can drop down near the base. Face left near the bottom of the ramp and drop down on the last few logs. After falling, there is some empty space you can run around in under the ramp. It is easy to jump back out.

== Stuck Zzz ==

If Keen falls asleep (by seeing the 'Zzz' animation sequence above his head) at a deadly enemy or on a hazard when god mode is turned on and then player turns off god mode, Keen dies and the 'Zzz' sequence doesn't get removed. This is because the 3-frame zee animation sequence doesn't use any contact routine in the game.
'''Fleex & Markeen's Keen 5 Level Pack''' is a levelpack created by [[user:Fleexy|Fleex]]. This mod is notable for being based on a tool called [[Markeen]], also by Fleex, which automatically generates random level map structures. Based on the [[Keen_5_Levels|Keen 5 originals]] these raw generated levels have only the foreground layer populated. These levels were then made playable and visually reasonable by Fleex. Care was taken to adhere to the artificially generated specifications as far as possible.

Routing & Remote Access (Level 10) was featured in [[O-Mega-Matic]], where it was modified and enlarged to fit the size requirement.

== Example of a randomly generated structure by Markeen ==
The first level map, as seen below, shows the original output of Markeen. The second image represents the finished level design polished by Fleex.
