Keen Dreams Gold Edition is the first true Keen Dreams source mod by Szemigi.

Technical informations
* The game uses codes from the source code of Keen Dreams version 1.92 (and partially version 1.00) of the original Keen Dreams. It contains code elements from Catacomb 3-D, Wolfenstein 3-D, NY00123's Keen Dreams Unofficial Tech Demo (version 0.96), K1n9_Duk3's reconstructed Keen 4-6, Gridlock's Atroxian Realm, Nisaba's Foray in the Forest, and lethal_guitar's BioMenace 1 source code.
* The newly updated version uses a completely new control panel interface, involving many features as well from Keen 4-6.
* Due to memory restrictions, the music amount is 16 only.
* The file formats are different.
* 1 daytime and 23 nighttime secret levels.
* <tt>/ALTTITLE</tt> parameter, which makes the game run with bitmap-based, alternative title screen.

Daytime Story
Billy Blaze, eight year-old genius, working diligently in his backyard clubhouse has created an interstellar starship from old soup cans, rubber cement, and plastic tubing. While his folks are out on the town and the babysitter has fallen asleep, Billy travels into his backyard workshop, dons his brother's football helmet, and transforms into...

COMMANDER KEEN--defender of Earth!

In his ship, the Bean-with-Bacon Megarocket, Keen dispenses galactic justice with an iron hand!

THIS EPISODE: "Keen Dreams" (Gold Edition)

We find young Billy discussing matters of paramount importance with his mother.

"I just saved the Earth, Mom," said Billy. "I don't have to eat vegetables."

"Sure, dear," said Billy's mom. "I bet Neil Armstrong never complained about HIS mashed potatoes."

"I bet Neil Armstrong never travelled to Vorticon VI and defeated the Grand Intellect, either," Billy mumbled at his plate. He sat there, legs dangling, staring at his offensive, starch-laden foe.

After a pointed remark about the quality of the mashed potatoes, Billy was sent to his room.

"Stupid vegetables," he grumbled, his eyelids growing heavy.

Soon Billy was fast asleep.

Suddenly he woke up, and his bed was atop a hill. On either side of his bed were giant potatoes wearing metal helmets and carrying bayonets.

"Come with us now, Captain Keen," said the Trooper.

"You've been brought here by the Dream Machine," said the Trooperina.

"Boobus Tuber and Bustling Tuberina, Their Majesties and our bosses are now your masters, come with us!"

Billy frowned, grabbed his football helmet off his bedpost, and started to put it on.

"First of all, spuds," Billy said, pushing down on the helmet. "That's COMMANDER Keen. Second of all, who do you think you are?"

"We're Tater Troopers, it's plain to see," said the Trooper. "So, get-"

Keen reached under his pillow and retrieved his Vorticon Hyperpistol. He moved it from "Stun," past "Disrupt," all the way up to "Fry to Delicate Brown."

"How about a walk on the fried side, you two?" Keen said.

Two BZZAPs later, Keen pouted.

"Aw, nuts. My Hyperpistol's empty," he said.

Just then, a child in chains ran up to him.

"Keen, oh, Keen, oh, Captain Keen! Save us from the Dream Machine!" he said.

"That's COMMANDER Keen!" the young genius corrected.

"Whatever. Save us!" said the child. "Here's my pogo stick. It may help in your quest."

So Billy hopped out of bed and started on his quest to defeat Their Vegesties and destroy the Dream Machine.

Nighttime Story

"You know, mom, I say vegetables aren't stupid at all." said Billy.

"Good to hear you say that, dear," said Billy's mom. "You'll be glad to know that dinner tonight has mashed potatoes again, but this time I spiced it up and also added some butter!"

"Oooh, sounds good!" replied Billy enthusiastically.

After finishing his dinner, Billy put his spoon down.

"DONE! Delicious!" he said to mom.

"Wow! You actually ate your vegetables? Great job, sweetie! You can stay up a little longer tonight."

Later, Billy got into bed and was fast asleep.

A few moments later, he woke up and the sky was darkened and studded with stars. Odd...

Billy jumped out of bed, contemplating an important question:

Is it the same quest or is it just an illusion of the original dream?

Keen grabbed his helmet off the bedpost, and raced down the hill, starting on his nightly quest...

Levels
The original game's levels are replaced by those from Keen Dreams Plus, though some were edited to add in new creatures. Moreover, a bonus nighttime quest exists as well, which also features some newer creatures and cameos as well. Last, but not least the title page is from Keen Dreams (version 1.00), but here with more corrected letter graphics.

Keen Meets the Meats is a Keen Dreams mod by DoomJedi, Szemigi, Levellass, troublesomekeen, and VikingBoyBilly. Its title is taken from the planned sequel of Keen Dreams that never went into production.

Story
The story involves Keen awakening in a prison cell on the planet Grund-Bief after he got a stomachache due to too much fast food during his sister's birthday party. Keen has been snatched by an Abduct-o-Beam of the organization known as McZargalds, MZ for short, which is led by the Mad Butcher, serves tenderized children and has lax hygiene standards. Not only that, the food on Grund-Bief is so putrid that it has gained sentience.

The protagonist is initially unarmed, but soon finds a weapon called Ultra-Spicy Arcturian Megameatballs that allows him to reduce enemies to piles of ashes. However, to defeat the Mad Butcher, he has to obtain an even more powerful weapon, namely thousand-year old Bloog Eggs. Keen must explore Grund-Bief to find the necessary Bloog Eggs so that he can confront the Mad Butcher and rewire the Abduct-O-Beam to save the Earth once again.

Release Info
The production of the mod was announced in September 2013. The first demo version with one level came out in 2015 as a belated Mort Day release. It was soon followed by a slightly modified demo on April Fools' Day, where Keen is changed into a creeping sausage. Another April Fools' demo was released in late April, which already reflects a more advanced state of the mod in terms of graphics. In that "censored edition", Keen is nude, but a certain part of him is covered by a censor bar. The finished mod was made available in May.
Versions
2015 releases
Three demos were released in Mar 16, Apr 1 and Apr 29. The full version was released on May 21, but with multiple memory usage issues that would cause in-game crashes.

2020 unofficial bugfix
K1n9_Duk3 released an unofficial bugfix dated 2020-10-03 with the following changes:

* The sprite data has been optimized with uGrab to reduce memory usage. This lowered the overall memory requirements by about 3k.
* Added a few other patches to avoid the infamous "MM_GETNEWBLOCK" and other memory-related errors.
* Added his screen update patch to get rid of the graphics glitches.
* The jumping Manic Weenie now uses the correct sprite for facing right.
* Moved some state definitions around to restore the Borland copyright string and thus get rid of the null pointer gibberish when the game quits.
* Fixed a bug in the LoadLIBFile code that caused glitches when loading the title screen image under certain circumstances. This can be reproduced in the unpatched version by following these steps:

> run the game
> start a new game in any difficulty
> end the first level with the F10+E cheat
> use the F10+I cheat to get enough rotten eggs
> enter the Mad Butcher's Lair level
> use the F10+Z cheat or die until you get a game over

* Fixed the savegame difficulty bug for good. The mod already had a patch that tried to deal with this issue, but that patch "fixed" the problem by setting the difficulty to hard (and only when restarting the level or entering a new level).
* The difficulty will no longer be set to hard if the player dies during the boss battle and restarts the level.
* The score box will now update the weapon icon when encountering the boss and when Keen dies during the boss battle and has to restart the level.

TODO
* Most levels need a redesign to make them work (better) within the limitations of the Keen Dreams code (i.e. no looking up or down, no ledge grabbing).

Death to the vorticons 3 – Fall of the Sudkoka is a mod released by shikadi in 2009.
‎
Technical Information
* Part of the Death to the Vorticons Trilogy
* Tileset: completely rearranged tileset
* Sprite animation frames: New monsters, some with patched behavior
* Story text: new with continuity to Death to the Vorticons 2
* Levels: 16 regular levels; 1 worldmap

Story
In our last episode, Keen stopped the mad king from firing at Vorticon VI, going to his palace to stop him, where he found a mindbelt, but not one built by Mortimer!

Episode three: Fall of the Sudkoka

Keen is worried, if Mortimer is not the only one who can make mindbelts, then the whole Grand Intellect thing can happen again. But who could hate the Vorticons so much?

The mad king, not as mad as first thought, explained that the planet had been visisted by a small ship carrying two demons who had enslaved their world. Tracking the ship's radio, Keen locates a purple, forrested planet populated with more demons and their just as evil green genie masters, who specialize in acids and nuclear technology.

WHAT KEEN MUST DO

The planet turns out to be the closest to its star, a burning world with a surface temrature hot enough to boil water. It is fortunate Keen is wearing his asbestos underwear! Now he has to find who is in charge and get them to stop this, before his BWB Megarocket melts.

Landing just south of a small town, he hopes to meet his new foes in lesser numbers, if he is lucky. But his luck may well run out.

You added the Items of Krodacia in the Category "Items", now they show up together with the official items in the item list, which is not good, if you add more please put them in the category "Mod Items", I'll create it. Tulip 22:01, 25 March 2009 (GMT)

Ooops! I never thought of that. I can make the necessary changes. Something else I now just thought of. There is a category for secret levels. Stone Temple is mixed in with the official Keen game secret levels. Obviously, I am going to need to change that, too. --Syllypryde 01:17, 26 March 2009 (GMT)
Hi Syllypryde - just looking at the images you're uploading - they look like they were taken with a DOSBox filter running. Is that correct? All screenshots on the wiki need to be "raw" (no filters.) Small images (such as these) should be double-sized (again with no filter) while full-screen images should not be double-size. Can you confirm that you are taking these screenshots with no filters? Thanks! -- Malvineous 23:04, 8 March 2011 (GMT)

: Actually, all fifteen of the level pictures I uploaded for Battle of the Brains were all taken from the Universe worldmap on the Battle of the Brains wikipage, not DosBox. I used MS Paint to cut out, copy, paste, and resize the pictures, then uploaded them to their corresponding levels. I had screwed up sizing up a few pictures and that is why some pictures have duplicates. Syllypryde 23:26, 8 March 2011 (GMT)

:: Ah right, probably best not to use MSPaint for that sort of thing, at least with resizing the results don't always come out that well. -- Malvineous 07:25, 13 March 2011 (GMT)
Operation Station Infiltration
The only level page created for this mod is Level 8: Magnetic Field Manipulator. I would like to create pages for all of the levels but I forgot how. I intend to add all the necessary level information required by the Wiki. I would like to also post all the level maps but I have no idea whatsoever on how to do that. Could someone please show me what to do? Or should I just wait until someone who actually knows what they are doing takes care of it first? Syllypryde (talk) 13:33, 4 November 2024 (GMT)

:I got all the level maps exported. I had to do some playing around with GalaxyView to get the sprites for the new enemies displayed correctly (it requires editing the .ini file), and I also had to edit some of the exported maps to fix the enemies that are supposed to be made of more than one sprite but were displayed as a single sprite (e.g. Shikadi Mines, Spherefuls, Vlorgs). I've never played the mod myself, but I hope the maps all look accurate. I'll upload them soon, and you can fill out the level information.
Described by Levellass as her swansong of Vorticon modding, Ye Olde Pirate Modde features extensive patching, introducing new features such as the ability to shoot vertically. A recoloured palette gives the impression of VGA graphics, and background music is provided courtesy of Lemm's TSR.

The mod's origins date back to 2006 when Ceilick and KeenRush started to work on a Keen&nbsp;2 mod. Ceilick picked up the project again by 2011 and changed it to Keen&nbsp;3. Eventually, he abandoned the mod and released the 'alpha' to the Keen community in December 2012.

Technical Information
Music
An extensive musical score was composed by non-fan Barry Taylor based around traditional English folk songs, notably those relating to water and ships. The mod holds the record for most songs for a single project (35) and uses a specially modified version of Lemm's TSR due to memory restrictions.

Graphics
Graphics are extensively rearranged with a new palette and extra tiles added. The ending screen was created by another fan and is of excellent quality.

Patching
The patchfile for the mod is the largest of any Keen Vorticons project. The palyer is given the ability to shoot vertically and a dozen new sprites are added with custom behaviors.

Errors
Due to pushing the memory limits of the game, the mod can only be run in Dosbox. Errors are also highly dependent on the player's computer and setup. The game can crash if the help file is called during normal gameplay. Sometimes levels on the map will not be marked as done, even when completed. Sometimes the game will crash. These errors make it difficult to play the entire mod through and are a valuable warning about leaving 'wriggle room' when designing a mod.

Story
Having recently calculated that he had saved every planet in the universe a minimum of six times, Commander Keen had completely lost track of his adventures and decided to visit the Oracle on Gonsticus IV to settle once and for all the timeline of his exploits. Sadly however he did not arrive directly on the planet, but due to a trivial miscalculation, had managed to interpose the Oracle's spare batteries between his ship and the ground, destroying them.

Upset at this accidental vandalism the Oracle Council demanded Keen make compensation by embarking on a perilous quest. Having no other choice but to accept, Keen headed out.

Keen has been sent to tackle the Space Pirates of Vorticon V, a group of violent criminals known for their looting of local systems. (It seems that they have been cutting heavily into the Gnosticus film industry revenues.) He must also recover the treasure stolen from a thousand worlds to help pay for the damage caused to the Oracle's backup power supply and also the Council's Janitor (Who was carrying the batteries at the time.)

Why do we consider AR as a Keen 4 mod?
Basically what the subject says. I know it started as a Keen 4 mod, but since it is now a source code mod, it doesn't make sense to call it Keen 4 mod anymore. I think it should be considered as a fangame, since it doesn't seem to patch the executable file and there is so much new stuff. If not, then I think calling it a Keen Dreams mod would make sense, since I think it used the Keen Dreams source code (although quite a lot is changed) and the files appear to use a ".CKD" file format. ::::With this debate of whether or not Atroxian Realm (AR) is a Keen 4 mod, many here seem to think that it did start out as a Keen 4 mod but then it was released as a source code mod. This is false. When the full version (v1.0) of AR was released on January 15th, 2016 it was released as a Keen 4 patched mod, NOT a source code mod. Although I do have to note that a source code version of v1.0 was released later. The first version of AR as a source code mod (v1.1) was released on Keen Day in 2019 by Gridlock and K1n9_Duk3, over THREE YEARS after AR's initial release. Even then v1.1 still had a Keen 4 patched version and a source code version. v1.2 was released October 31st of 2019, again having a Keen 4 patched version and a source code version. v1.3 was released November 14th 2019, again having a Keen 4 patched version and a source code version. It was wasn't until it's final version (v1.4) was released on May 9th 2020, which K1n9_Duk3 initially called it an unofficial update, which Gridlock has since okayed, is now exclusively source code. If someone is going to use the faulty logic that AR is not a Keen 4 mod simply because it's final release is strictly source code, you have conveniently left out that fact that four different versions of this game have Keen 4 patched versions and are still available to download and play.

::::I could understand if all the Keen 4 elements were eliminated in the final source code making it a completely different game, but its transition from mod to source code still has the Keen 4 elements intact. The only things that the source code has changed is eliminate the memory issues, crash issues, made the game more stable, and added an items window to show everything available in each individual level. All the Keen 4 elements from the patched code are still intact in the source code.

::::The whole point of modding is to not only maintain that essence and Keenishness of all of the original Keen games, it was also to create fun and better Keen games. As long as the spirit of Keen is intact that is all that should matter. Syllypryde (talk) 21:34, 18 November 2024 (GMT)

:::::@SodiumtheGlitcher: I believe it is possible to classify Atroxian Realm as both a Keen 4 mod and source code mod. If one were to add the Keen 4 mods category to the page, the mod would appear in both pictorial lists for Keen 4 mods and source code mods. The only thing about it that makes me reluctant to do so is that it would make Atroxian Realm count twice in the total mod count in the index page.

:::::@Syllypryde: Where is this Keen 4 mod version you speak of? I checked the version 1.0 download link in both the KeenWiki article and PCKF thread, and there is no KEEN4E.EXE, nor a patch file. Not even the files have a CK4 file extension; it's CKD. I distinctively remember this being the case when I first downloaded it back in 2016. I also don't see the difference between the latest version and the original version, at least not in terms of the files available, so I'm not sure where you got that whole idea from. I'd also like to point out that the discussion here was first started in 2017, two years before v1.1 of the mod came out.

:::::It is true that Atroxian Realm's development was largely influenced by the way Keen 4 works, and the final release is a reflection of that. However, the final release is not a patch that you apply to a copy of Keen 4. It can't be opened in level editors the same exact way you could with a Keen 4 mod (check page 2 of the PCKF thread, second post by Fleexy). It is a compilation of code based on reverse-engineered Galaxy/Dreams code and enemy behaviors written from scratch. If we're judging a mod by how many of the original elements are intact, then is NetKeen a Keen 5 mod for having a few Keen 5 elements left intact (e.g. Goplat pose) and using Keen 5 as a base? What about patched mods that change nearly the whole game, such as Sunset? Could that still be called a Keen 1 mod? If someone patches all of Keen 5 into a Keen 4 mod, then is it really a Keen 4 mod? I find this to be a very messy subject, and we could probably go on an eternal debate over it, but I think the simplest way to distinguish between patched mods and source code mods is that the former is distributed as patches for the vanilla exe, while the latter is newly compiled code with a new exe.

:::::Your last paragraph on the point of modding could also apply to fangames, at least the ones that aim to recreate the Keen gameplay, like The Mystery of Isis II and Planet Cloudius IX. To me, modding is about using the original Keen engine and making a new game out of that, which applies to both patch and source mods. I see patch mods as working with a provided set of creatures and mechanics, changing some things if needed (or even all of it if you really want to), while source mods are an opportunity to explore brand new ideas created from scratch while using the Keen engine. In a way, source modding kinda blurs the line between mods and fangames. I think it doesn't help that KeenWiki and the whole modding scene started long before source modding was even considered a possibility. If modding had begun with source modding, I'd guarantee that instead of calling them Keen 4/5/6 mods, we'd call them all Galaxy mods and only use the episode identifier for levelpacks. Maybe. Quillax (talk) 08:10, 19 November 2024 (GMT)

::::::" What about patched mods that change nearly the whole game, such as Sunset? Could that still be called a Keen 1 mod?"

Actually Keen Sunset is listed as a Keen 1 mod. You can look it up yourself on the Wiki. Syllypryde (talk) 19:43, 19 November 2024 (GMT)

:::::::Indeed. I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to tell me with that point you just made, to be honest. It's always been a Keen 1 mod in my eyes. I should've worded that phrase better, asking "Can that no longer be called a Keen 1 mod".

:::::::I get your point that AR still has many elements from its Keen 4 mod iteration left intact. Heck, DarkAle's New Keen 5 Levelpack seems just like a Keen 5 levelpack, yet I decided to classify it under source mods. My line of thinking is that if that's considered a Keen 5 levelpack, and AR is a Keen 4 mod, then would Foray in the Forest be considered a Keen 4 mod too? If not, then why? Like AR, FitF started life as a Keen 4 mod, transitioned to a source mod, and kept some Keen 4 elements fairly intact. Yes, FitF had way more added after transition than AR, but is there an objective measure of that? Where would we draw the line? How much can you add or change until the source mod can no longer be assigned to a specific episode? Doesn't FitF have more in common with Keen 4 than, say, Kube? Do you see the problem here?

:::::::I've had a thought that instead of using patch file vs compiled code, judgement could be based on the file extensions. Like, if the source mod levelpacks by DarkAle and Ceilick use CK4 and CK5 for file extensions, then they could be tied to an episode number and still be classified as source mods via adding categories. AR and FitF would remain as source mods since they use CKD and CKS respectively. Only issue is that it can easily be cheated. Changing the file extensions and the code that reads them is very easy I imagine. Also, some patch mods change the file extensions too. And what would we make out of NetKeen? I've just recently moved that from a fangame to a source mod, since it uses the core Galaxy code.

:::::::So far, I find it easiest and the least troublesome to draw the line between episode-specific mods and source mods on whether they're distributed as patches or compiled code. If you find that weird or stupid, then I understand. K1n9_Duk3 once said that classifying mods under a specific episode is only necessary because you need a copy of that episode for the mod to work, and I agree. To run Keen Asylum you need a copy of the Keen 5 exe, but you don't need one for DarkAle's levelpack, nor Ceilick's, as their levelpacks are provided with a brand new exe compiled from a new source. K1n9_Duk3 also stated that you could consider the official Keen games to be mods of each other, which is true if you really want to stretch it. For the average person who comes here to download a mod, I think it's best to organize it so that they can go "This is a Keen 4 mod because it needs some Keen 4 files to work, and I may have to supply them if the download doesn't have them," if you know what I mean. Maybe there's a better way of doing this? Perhaps a compromise could be made? Quillax (talk) 09:20, 21 November 2024 (GMT)

Actually what you just explained and what K1n9_Duk3 corroborates makes perfect sense to me. If you need the execute file from an official Keen game to run the mod than it is a mod of that game. Just because a few of us still see certain mods as Keen 4 or otherwise doesn't mean they have to classified as such on the Wiki. I have always been perfectly fine with source code mods having their own category. But I am vehemently opposed to calling them fan games for 2 reasons: 1) As I said before most fan games are shite and lumping source code mods in with them in my opinion just cheapens their greatness and 2) Despite source code mods using their own execute file, they still use the same audioct, audiohed, config, egadict, egagraph, egahead, gamemaps, maphead, etc. files as the official Keen games. Obviously they have been modified and their file extensions changed. As long as source code mods use the same general files as the original games they should be source code mods. Fan games should be classified as such if they use a completely different engine and are created with completely different files, especially if they deviate significantly from the gameplay of the original and modded Keen games.

All the available set point totals that are present have already been added to all the levels. Sky Sanctum, Realm Reactor and both Kridonea Ruins have no points available. In Crystal Sanctuary you might have noticed that all the points available are all question marks? When you collect a question mark you get a completely random bonus. They could be 100-5,000 points, a spark or even an extra life. It is impossible to determine the total number of points in Crystal Sanctuary because the points will be completely random every time you play the level. The High Scores which is unreachable has no points either. I noticed I forgot to put zeros for the points and ammo for the High Scores so I will add those now. The unused levels are not playable so there is no point in adding points or ammo for those levels.

Basically what the subject says. I know it started as a Keen 4 mod, but since it is now a source code mod, it doesn't make sense to call it Keen 4 mod anymore. I think it should be considered as a fangame, since it doesn't seem to patch the executable file and there is so much new stuff. NetKeen used some of the Keen:Galaxy code and is considered as a fangame in this wiki, so I don't see why can't we consider Atroxian Realm as a fangame too. If not, then I think calling it a Keen Dreams mod would make sense, since I think it used the Keen Dreams source code (although quite a lot is changed) and the files appear to use a ".CKD" file format.
With this debate of whether or not Atroxian Realm (AR) is a Keen 4 mod, many here seem to think that it did start out as a Keen 4 mod but then it was released as a source code mod.

I could understand if all the Keen 4 elements were eliminated in the final source code making it a completely different game, but its transition from mod to source code still has the Keen 4 elements intact. The only things that the source code has changed is eliminate the memory issues, crash issues, made the game more stable, and added an items window to show everything available in each individual level. All the Keen 4 elements from the patched code are still intact in the source code.

The whole point of modding is to not only maintain that essence and Keenishness of all of the original Keen games, it was also to create fun and better Keen games. As long as the spirit of Keen is intact that is all that should matter. Syllypryde (talk) 21:34, 18 November 2024 (GMT)
