Made in 1999?

The release date is stated as 2001-11-03, but yet it appears in Vorticon VI, a fansite from 1999 (evidenced by the index page), where all of the games listed in that link were made in 1999 or earlier. I'm not sure where the 2001 date comes from, since the files in the download are dated 2003-03-27, but one or two of those dates might've came from copy-and-pasting the files. Is there any other evidence that this game was made in 1999? Quillax (talk) 08:58, 29 March 2024 (GMT)

It looks as if the date information refers to the dynamic link libraries (DLL) contained in the package. At least these bear the time stamp of 1999. We can't say much about the rest, except that the version we have seems to be from 2003. Whether this is a revised version or the original from earlier days cannot be clearly reconstructed on the basis of the data available to us. In other words: I don't know what the correct information is either.

Those DLLs were probably copy-and-pasted from somewhere else, probably another Klik & Play game. Those particular DLLs are required to run games made with the program. Though, when copy-and-pasting files, isn't it possible for the date of the pasted file to become overwritten by the current date? I see that happen to folders, but I don't know about files.
Regarding when exactly the game came out, Grandy02 would probably know about this. He doesn't seem to be active in KeenWiki for a long time, but he made an update to PCKF Archive early this year. Snortimer might also know; he's been a community member since 1998, and he played this game according to a PCKF post. Not sure when did he play it, but given the context it might've been back in the day. Quillax (talk) 08:20, 16 July 2024 (GMT)
Quillax contacted me about this recently via PM on PCKF, and I thought it would be a good idea to answer publicly.
This was an interesting question!
To be honest, when I was originally adding the game and its dates to the KeenWiki "List of fan games" article, I looked at the dates that the files had on my computer, all of which had the date of 2001-11-02 2:57pm.
But... isn't it suspicious that all the files had the exact same date and time, which isn't typical for game files? Usually some data files are older, and the .exe is the newest...
So I just now used Voidtools' Everything to search my computer for any other file on my computer named "bsoccer".
And, what do you know! I found two more directories.
One directory has the same files but with the date 1999-03-01 9:16PM on all of them.
And ANOTHER directory has just 3 files:
bsoccer.dat
setup.bin
setup.exe
...all of which have the date 1999-02-11 2:56PM !!
Here, I've zipped it up:
https://files.fm/u/j7kp73tx4u
The file should stay up for 2 weeks.
So it looks like the original download was a "setup" directory, and after you click "setup.exe", it extracts the rest of the game files. It looks like I did this twice, once in 1999 and once in 2001. Hence the confusion!
As far as I can tell, then, the original release would have been Feb 11, 1999. Snortimer (talk) 06:45, 30 October 2024 (GMT)
Sweet! Thanks, Snortimer! I'm really happy that you answered the question (in a detailed manner too!) and corrected the release date! I knew you would know something about this game's release! I got the original download preserved in my computer. It's definitely good to preserve the installer files, since they have the original dates. Quillax (talk) 07:27, 30 October 2024 (GMT)
