Talk:Cameo Appearances

The community discovered some neat Commander Keen related references in other games as well. However I'm not quite sure whether or not they do fit the "Cameo" topic. Maybe one can revisit the following links and make a decision.

If I'm not mistaken, the character in Mother 3 can be named anything, I wouldn't count that. "Mortimer" is probably a coincidence? The Dopefish one definitely is a cameo, though at the moment, Dopefish cameos are not covered by the page. But I'd support their addition, after all, the creature does originate from Keen. --Grandy02 (talk) 15:02, 8 August 2021 (GMT)
I think all Dopefish references should be covered on Keenwiki. dopefish.com hasn't been updated in nearly 10 years, and even then it was missing some things. Maybe the Dopefish references could be on a seperate page though, because of the sheer number of them.
Also, Commander Keen references evidently aren't limited to video games, so how should those be handled? Should a seperate section be made for non-video game cameo appearances? Pandakeen (talk) 18:46, 10 August 2021 (GMT)
Yeah, there should definitely be a separate section (with subsections) for non-game cameos. Regarding the Dopefish references, I'd prefer to have everything on the same page. --Grandy02 (talk) 15:40, 5 September 2021 (GMT)
I agree that KeenWiki should cover all Dopefish references, since Joe Siegler's website is very outdated. I also prefer to have everything on the same page. Non-game cameos would also be good to put in here, although the "Other games" section in the main page may need to be renamed. Maybe "Other games and media"? "Other games and media" sounds good. And yeah, a seperate page for Dopefish references might be excessive, but I wonder if it should at least have a seperate section. Pandakeen (talk) 19:56, 4 March 2023 (GMT)
I wouldn't mind having a separate section for Dopefish cameos on the same page. What about media that include both the Dopefish and another reference to Keen? But that's probably so rare that there would only be a little bit of redundancy. --Grandy02 (talk) 16:26, 10 March 2023 (GMT)
Hmm yeah. I imagine they could just be put under the general references when there's both Dopefish and general Keen references. Anyways, if no one objects, I'll start importing all the (notable) references from dopefish.com onto this page under a new section "Dopefish References", and adding the header "General References in Video Games" for what's already on here. We can probably sort out the non-game references later, but we've gone far too long not documenting the most prevalent form of Keen references. Pandakeen (talk) 20:01, 10 March 2023 (GMT)
On second thought, I think the Dopefish references probably should still have their own page, just due to the sheer number of them (one source said there were over 70 games with Dopefish cameos). Pandakeen (talk) 22:12, 7 June 2023 (GMT)

Change DoomWiki links?

I notice there are a few places on KeenWiki that link to the Doom Wiki (Cameo Appearances, Standard Galactic Alphabet). These link to the one at "doom.fandom.com". However, I think they should be changed to instead link to "doomwiki.org". I'm not really part of the Doom community, but as far as I know, a good portion of them actually prefer the latter wiki and they consider the Fandom wiki to be obsolete. I went ahead and changed the links. If anyone objects, let me know. Pandakeen (talk) 22:17, 7 June 2023 (GMT)

Proof that JumpJet Rex has a Keen reference?

From the screenshot alone it's kind of hard to tell if it's SGA. I don't know anything about this game other than that screenshot, so I'm wondering if there's more proof of it being an intentional Keen reference. Pandakeen (talk) 22:00, 10 March 2023 (GMT)

Hm, that's a good point. I'd think that if they weren't going for SGA, they could've done simpler ways of making the hat sprite, including:
  • Nothing on the hat (just a blank white circle).
  • A straight (or wavy) horizontal line.
  • A letter M.
As it is, though, it looks like SGA letter A. The horizontal line in the bottom blends with the hat's rim, yeah, but I thought it looked like SGA at first glance. I guess there's a possibility that it could be a letter C, though, whatever that would stand for (cap?). The game has multiple references to retro video games (such as using the Mega Man health filling sound and rock tiles that resemble those from Super Mario Bros), but aside from the possible SGA, they all seem to be for console games. I wonder what do other people think about this. Quinton (talk) 06:09, 8 August 2023 (GMT)
